Kayak Launch Grand Opening at Four Mile Run Park

Kayak Launch Grand Opening Web Banner

The City of Alexandria’s Department of Recreation, Parks & Cultural Activities will celebrate the grand opening of a new ADA-compliant kayak launch at Four Mile Run Park (3700 Commonwealth Ave.) on Saturday, May 9, from 12-3 p.m. This milestone project expands public access to the water while promoting inclusive outdoor recreation.

Developed by the Four Mile Run Conservancy, the launch is the first of its kind in the DC metro area, featuring a raised boardwalk ramp with ADA-compliant slopes, a gangway and floating dock, a wheelchair transfer platform, and a roller entry and exit system. These features make launching and landing safer and easier, especially for beginners, solo paddlers, and individuals with mobility challenges. The Four Mile Run Conservancy is also a Gold Medal recipient of the Governor’s Environmental Excellence Award, recognized for its Water Access for All initiative.

Located along the tidal portion of Four Mile Run, a tributary of the Potomac River, the site offers calm, shallow waters ideal for learning to paddle. It also connects to the Potomac River Water Trail and nearby trails, giving paddlers access to wetlands and natural areas that were previously difficult to reach.

Bring Your Own Kayak & RSVP Information

Bring your own kayak and experience the river at our grand opening celebration! Space is limited for personal watercraft use at the new launch, so be sure to RSVP to attend and select the appropriate ticket option if you plan to bring your own kayak to reserve your spot.

Remarks begin at 12:30 p.m.; the event features music, a Mobile Art Lab art project, and more.

Beyond recreation, the project supports community health, environmental education, and stewardship by providing free, equitable access to nature. It also creates new opportunities for programming, such as guided paddles, cleanups, and youth outdoor learning.

Join the community in celebrating this exciting new gateway to the water!
