Chief Deputy Plaskus has served with ASO since 2008 and worked in the Detention Center, Special Operations, Inmate Services, Support Services, and Administrative Support, where she has most recently been the division commander. Captain Harding began her ASO career in 2008 and has worked in the Detention Center, Judicial Services, Administrative Support, and Support Services where she is currently coordinating implementation of the new jail management system. Serving with ASO since 2015, Lieutenant Amponsem has extensive experience at the Detention Center, handled watch commander responsibilities as needed, and recently assisted with a pilot program for new sergeant training. Since joining ASO in 2020, Sergeant Asonglefac has served at the Detention Center and in Judicial Services and is also chair of the Sheriff’s Employee Advisory Committee and vice president of the Sheriff’s Association. Best wishes to all!

Chamber of Commerce Honors Deputies with Life Saving Awards

Two deputies were among those recognized by the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce at its annual Community Champions Honors on May 22. Deputy Spitzer and Deputy Rose received life saving awards for their response, while off-duty, to a crash along the Beltway involving an overturned pick-up truck with children inside. Deputy Rose had witnessed the vehicle being driven recklessly moments before the crash occurred. She immediately stopped to render aid, and Deputy Spitzer stopped to assist in rescue efforts. The Community Champions Honors recognized outstanding actions by members of Alexandria’s workforce, both in the public and private sectors.

ASO Provides Free Summer Safety Resources

Now that school is out, kids are spending more time at home and visiting friends' homes and lots of families have summer travel plans. ASO wants to help keep Alexandrians safe and reminds residents of two free services to protect your home and your family. With our Away from Home Checks, deputies conduct visual surveys of homes and check accessible doors and windows while residents are out-of-town. ASO also provides free gun locks to prevent tragic accidents involving unsecured firearms and encourages parents to talk about gun safety with their children and with other parents and caregivers about their firearms storage before a child visits.

Second Chance Unit Residents Participate in Father’s Day Program

Family ties are extremely important for people in custody and several Detention Center residents reflected on those relationships during a recent activity with a Father's Day focus. With guidance from Reentry Counselor Mustafa Saboor and Master Deputy Stubblefield, men in the Second Chance Unit discussed the lessons they learned from their own fathers and grandfathers, and some shared their hopes for their children. Each also painted a canvas or t-shirt inspired by the Father's Day theme, like Mr. McKoy's portrait of his grandfather who told him, “If it is to be, it’s up to me.”

Sheriff Part of New Leadership Class with National Sheriffs’ Institute

Sheriff Sean Casey successfully completed the inaugural session of the National Sheriffs’ Institute (NSI) Communicating for Impact program this month at the FBI Academy in Quantico. This course of study was provided at no cost to the Sheriff’s Office or the City by the National Institute of Corrections and U.S. Department of Justice, in collaboration with the Major County Sheriffs of America. Sheriff Casey was selected to join 17 other sheriffs from across the country to attend this program, which focuses on enhancing a sheriff’s ability to inspire, motivate, inform, build trust, and lead change, while promoting and supporting their organization’s mission, vision, and values.

Director Completes Leadership Alexandria

Congratulations to Director LaTanya Ervin and her fellow Leadership Alexandria classmates! They recently wrapped up the Chamber of Commerce’s intensive nine-month leadership development program. This engaging experience gave Director Ervin and her cohort a firsthand look at Alexandria’s economic development, education, local and state government, and other systems, and they gained insights with on-site visits and discussions with key officials, executives, and innovators. Director Ervin found the program to be very rewarding and she was especially impressed by the tour of AlexRenew!
