Spring is Here: Street Sweeping, Pothole Palooza, Gateway Cleaning, and Mulch Pick-up

The City of Alexandria’s Department of Transportation & Environmental Services is pleased to welcome the spring season, and with it the return of critical, seasonal programs that keep streets clean and safe, beautify public spaces, and ensure sustainable resource recovery efforts.

Street Sweeping Resumes

Citywide street sweeping began on Monday, March 3. Crews will work to complete three passes of approximately 560 lane miles of City streets, with each pass taking an estimated 12 weeks. These efforts keep neighborhoods and commercial corridors clean and protect waterways from debris runoff.

Please observe posted “No Parking” restrictions on street sweeping blocks, as well as any temporary “No Parking” signs posted in some neighborhoods to help facilitate debris removal. In the event of inclement weather, street sweeping will not occur but parking restrictions will still apply. This is because Parking Enforcement follows City ordinances related to official signage, and not the weather.

To request additional street sweeping, please use Alex311 or call 703.746.4311.

Pothole Palooza

The City’s spring Pothole Palooza, a monthlong effort to repair Alexandria streets after routine, winter-weather related damage, will return Monday, March 31. Street and Sewer Maintenance crews will work diligently across the city to find and repair potholes along Alexandria’s right-of-way.

As the operation moves through the city, residents may encounter periodic lane closures as crews identify and repair any potholes encountered. Weekly updates on where to expect pothole patrol work will be posted to the Department of Transportation & Environmental Services Facebook and X accounts. The Pothole Palooza will focus on major street networks and does not include public alleys or parking spaces.

General street repaving operations will resume on Monday, April 21 and run through early November.

The spring Pothole Palooza is estimated to complete their work by Wednesday, April 30. After the end of Pothole Palooza, residents should report potholes to Alex311 by phone at 703.746.4311 or online at alex311.alexandriava.gov.

Gateway Cleaning

Spring Gateway Cleaning work is scheduled to begin Saturday, April 5, and will continue each Saturday until all gateway areas are complete. The focus of Gateway Cleaning is to “spruce up” entry points to the City and remove litter and debris after the winter season. The gateways included in the program are located at:

  • Telegraph Road

  • Duke Street and I-395

  • Van Dorn Street and Eisenhower Avenue

  • King Street and I-395

Weekly updates on where to expect Gateway Cleaning work will be posted to the Department of Transportation & Environmental Services Facebook and X accounts.

Spring Mulch Program

The City is now accepting orders from residents for spring leaf mulch delivery. Deliveries will begin on Tuesday, April 1 and continue through mid-June. Leaf mulch supplies and delivery dates and times are limited, and appointments are on a first-come, first-served basis. There is a $65 delivery charge for each half-load (3-6 cubic yards) and $130 for a full load (9-12 cubic yards).

Free mulch is also available for Alexandria residents to pick up at 4215 Eisenhower Avenue, Monday through Saturday, from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on an ongoing basis. No commercial vehicles and machinery are permitted at the mulch site, which is under surveillance.

Please call Alex311 to report a violation and call 911 for an immediate emergency. Visit alexandriava.gov/Mulch for more information.
