Summer Metro Updates: Blue Line Closures & New Bus Route Changes in Alexandria
Upcoming Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) Metro service changes will affect commutes in Alexandria this summer. From July 5 through July 26, 2025, Metro will close parts of the Blue Line for major construction and rehabilitation work.
What This Means for Alexandria Commuters:
Blue Line Closures
- Van Dorn Street and Franconia-Springfield stations will be closed during this period. Free shuttle buses will replace train service at closed stations.
- Free parking will be available at Van Dorn Street and Franconia-Springfield during the closure.
- Blue Line trains will end service at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.
Yellow Line Service
- The Yellow Line stations at Potomac Yard, Braddock Road, and King Street-Old Town will remain open and operating as usual.
- On the weekends of July 12-13 and July 19-20, Yellow Line trains will operate on a single track between Huntington and Braddock Road, which may cause some delays.

Additional Changes from WMATA to Enhance Rider Experience
Metro will rename and update all bus routes starting June 29, 2025, as part of the Better Bus Network initiative. Routes starting in Alexandria/Arlington will now begin with “A.” See all the upcoming route changes on Metro’s website.
To further simplify travel across the region, Metro has launched Tap. Ride. Go., allowing customers to pay fares by tapping a contactless credit/debit card, phone, or smartwatch at rail station faregates, no SmarTrip card or fare machine needed. SmarTrip cards will remain valid. While open payment boosts convenience for visitors and occasional riders, regular users and those with discounts or SmartBenefits should continue using their designated SmarTrip cards.
