City of Alexandria Announces Speed Limit Reductions on the West End to Support Safer Streets

As part of Alexandria’s ongoing commitment to safer streets, speed limits on Edsall Road and Yoakum Parkway will be reduced from 35 MPH to 25 MPH beginning in April 2026.

When the City developed its Vision Zero Action Plan, one of the most common concerns heard from the community was speeding. Lowering speed limits is one of the most effective steps we can take to respond to that concern and improve safety for everyone who uses our streets. Over the past five years, there have been more than 100 crashes along these corridors, including several that resulted in serious injuries. Speed plays a major role in both how often crashes occur and how severe they are. At 35 MPH, the risk of serious injury or death is significantly higher than at 25 MPH.

By reducing speeds, we can help prevent crashes and lessen the severity when they do occur, making streets safer for people walking, biking, taking transit, and driving.

Additional improvements are also planned. On Yoakum Parkway, changes are being made to improve access, comfort, and safety for all users. On Edsall Road, the City is continuing to explore design solutions that will further enhance safety over time. These speed limit reductions are an important near-term step while longer-term improvements are developed.
