Clean the Bay Day with the City of Alexandria

Join the City of Alexandria this Saturday, May 2, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., for Clean the Bay Day at Oronoco Park. At this annual event sponsored by the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, members of the community come together to remove litter and debris from the park and shoreline and protect local wildlife, the Potomac River, and the Chesapeake Bay.

City staff will provide gloves, trash grabbers, and bags for all participants, and first aid kits will be onsite for safety. Participants are encouraged to bring sunscreen, snacks, and water, and wear appropriate clothing including long pants and closed-toe shoes.

To RSVP or request additional information, contact anthony.minnick@alexandriava.gov

Additional actions to protect the Bay include:

  • Keep pet waste out of the City’s storm drains by picking up and properly disposing of it in trash cans.
  • Keep the City litter-free, as waste dropped on streets, sidewalks, or in parks ends up in local waterways, the Potomac River, and the Chesapeake Bay.
  • Spring is here! Reduce or eliminate fertilizer use on lawns, as excess fertilizer contributes to poor water quality. Test your soil before applying.  Also, consider taking the no-fertilizer pledge to qualify for a Stormwater Utility fee credit.

If you suspect contamination or an illicit discharge entering the City’s waterways, please contact Alex311.

For more information on the City’s efforts to protect the Chesapeake Bay and other local waterways, please visit the Stormwater website.

To request reasonable disability accommodations, contact anthony.minnick@alexandriava.gov or call 703-746-4132 (Virginia Relay 711)
