REMINDER: City of Alexandria School Speed Zone Camera Testing Tomorrow, Enforcement Returns August 24

The City of Alexandria will test school zone flashers and camera systems on Friday, August 21 ahead of the first day of school for ACPS next week. Residents may see the flashers in operation during normal weekday hours as part of the test. No citations will be issued during the testing period.

A map of the City of Alexandria showing five speed camera locations in the following school zones: George Washington Middle, Alexandria City High School King Street Campus, Alexandria City High School Minnie Howard Campus, John Adams Elementary/Ferdinand T. Day Elementary, Hammond Middle, and William Ramsay Elementary.

The cameras are located in the following school zones:

  • Alexandria City High School – King Street Campus (King Street, between Quaker Lane and Scroggins Road)
  • Alexandria City High School – Minnie Howard Campus (Braddock Road, between Marlee Way and Marlboro Drive)
  • William Ramsay Elementary School (North Beauregard Street, between North Morgan Street and Roanoke Avenue)
  • Francis Hammond Middle School (Seminary Road, between Kenmore Avenue and North Jordan Street)
  • John Adams Elementary School and Ferdinand T. Day Elementary School (North Beauregard Street, between North Highview Lane and Reading Avenue)
  • George Washington Middle School (Mount Vernon Avenue, between Braddock Road and Luray Avenue)

School zone speed camera enforcement will resume on Monday, August 24, the first day of school for the majority of Alexandria City Public Schools. Clear signs are in place to inform drivers where school zone speed camera areas begin and end. Each zone is approximately ¼ mile long and has a posted speed limit of 15 MPH when school zone signs are flashing, which indicates that cameras are active.

Drivers should note that the speed cameras will enforce the midday school zone speed limits for ACHS King Street and ACHS Minnie Howard while students transition between campuses.

The speed cameras automatically record speed limit violations using radar technology. After a sworn law enforcement officer affirms a violation, a speeding citation will be mailed to the vehicle’s owner, lessee, or renter. The maximum fine is $100.

The City is committed to providing Safe Routes to School, and vehicle speed is among the top concerns cited by parents and guardians when asked about their children walking or biking to school. Speed cameras are a proven safety countermeasure that can reduce the number of crashes by more than 50%, according to research from the U.S. Department of Transportation. Automated enforcement also enables the City to utilize police resources in other high-priority areas.
