National Fentanyl Awareness Day

Alexandria recognizes National Fentanyl Awareness Day Tuesday, April 29 at the Del Pepper Community Resource Center with education, demos, and free naloxone and test strips. The City and partners will also host a week of outreach and distribution across Alexandria. With fentanyl increasingly found in the illegal drug supply and counterfeit pills, awareness and access to life-saving tools like naloxone are more important than ever to help residents stay informed and prepared.

Know the Risks. Save a Life.

National Fentanyl Awareness Day is a call to action, bringing together businesses, nonprofits, schools, and government agencies to raise awareness about fentanyl and today’s increasingly unpredictable drug supply.

While fentanyl is often associated with opioids, it is now commonly found in counterfeit pills and cocaine, often without a person’s knowledge. This means individuals may be exposed to fentanyl even if they are not intentionally using opioids.

New synthetic substances are also emerging in the drug supply. Substances such as medetomidine, a veterinary sedative similar to xylazine (“tranq”), have been identified in some regions and may increase overdose risk or complicate response.

As a result, overdose risk is no longer limited to opioid use alone. Many overdoses now involve multiple substances, and it is increasingly difficult to know what is in any non-prescribed substance.

Understanding these risks helps individuals and communities respond more effectively. Carrying naloxone, recognizing overdose signs, and calling 911 in an emergency can save lives. Naloxone remains an important tool for reversing opioid overdoses, even when other substances may also be present.

The City of Alexandria will host National Fentanyl Awareness Day on Tuesday, April 29 at the Del Pepper Community Resource Center. The event will include education, demonstrations, treatment information, and free naloxone and test strips. Community partners will be on site to share resources and support awareness efforts.
