Personal Responsibility Education Program Grant (PREP)
Personal Responsibility Education Program Grant (PREP)
The Alexandria Campaign on Adolescent Pregnancy (ACAP) was awarded a competitive Personal Responsibility Education Program (PREP) grant in September 2012, January 2016, October 2021 and most recently in September 2024 by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Administration for Children and Families, Family & Youth Services Bureau* to implement teen pregnancy prevention evidence-based programming. The purpose of the Competitive PREP program is to educate youth and young adults on both abstinence and contraception to prevent pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV/AIDS, and promote successful transition of youth to adulthood through education on key topics. Currently, ACAP PREP grant partners are implementing seven evidence-based teen pregnancy prevention programs with at least four adulthood preparation subjects at 13 locations across the City of Alexandria.
Through the PREP Grant, ACAP partners with Capital Youth Empowerment Program (CYEP), Tenants and Workers United (TWU) and Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS). CYEP whose organization is dedicated to providing the Northern Virginia area with Fatherhood and Teen Pregnancy Prevention programs, implements: Be Proud! Be Responsible!, Draw The Line, Love Notes (coming soon) and El Camino at several sites across the City. TWU implements the Teen Outreach Program (TOP) curriculum with their youth members, and ACAP partners with Alexandria City Public Schools to support their Family Life Education (FLE) curriculum for 6-10th grade students.
Adulthood Preparation Subjects are provided to ACAP PREP Grant youth participants. ACAP has partnered with YHelp! to expand their afterschool programming across the City at several recreational centers which support many of the adulthood preparation subjects. ACAP’s Peer Advocates also facilitate workshops on sexual health, the importance of self-care, and healthy communication to many PREP sites.
