The scope of facility improvements is highly invasive, and requires the full closure of the facility to ensure public safety, reduce costs, and shorten the improvement period. The City of Alexandria Office of the Arts and the Alexandria Convention & Visitors Association announced a $70.7 million in economic impact for the arts at an event on March 5, 2013. During the program, the city was recognized as one of 44 Top ArtPlaces in the U.S. On December 11, 2012 City Council authorized City Manager Rashad M. Young to contract for the acquisition of the property at 5325 Polk Ave. for $1.9 million. The City’s purchase of this 2.34 acre property used the $1.5 million provided by the Department of Defense to mitigate loss of open space in the West End, as well as $0.4 million in City Open Space funds. The Advisory Group was re-established by City Council resolution in June 2011. The group will provide City staff recommendations on the appropriate balance of park uses, as well as implanting education and outreach opportunities and implantation of recommendations made in the 2011 Fort Ward Park and Museum Area Stakeholder Advisory Group report Alexandria is a caring community that promotes healthy lifestyles and physical fitness for individuals, families and our youth.
