The Department of Recreation, Parks, and Cultural Activities provides a variety of programs for youth ages 11-17. All programs offer fun, safe, and age-appropriate activities that create opportunities for success and provide positive alternatives to undesirable activities.

CITYWIDE ANNUAL EVENTS

RPCA hosts free annual Teen Events full of fun, connection, and new experiences. Events happen the same month each year, though dates may vary. Most are free—some field trips may have a small fee. Join us and make lasting memories!

Block Bash

Block Bash, happening every August, is the ultimate end-of-summer teen party! Splash in the outdoor pool, rollerblade indoors, and enjoy games, music, and more. Don’t miss this final celebration before school starts—it’s the perfect way to wrap up the season!

Teen Appreciation Day

Teen Appreciation Day kicks off every March 21 with games, music, food, and prizes—all to celebrate YOU! Each teen recreation center brings its own unique lineup of fun and activities, so there’s something for everyone. Don’t miss it next year—bring your friends and join the celebration!

Park-a-Palooza

Park-a-Palooza happens May 17 with our teen twist on Kids to Parks Day—featuring games, music, and serious rec center pride! Powered by RPCA & the National Park Trust, it’s all about outdoor fun and friendly competition. Space is limited for participants, but all are welcome to cheer!

    Stop by and hang out in the teen room, and get free popcorn!

    Tuesdays, 6 p.m.
    Come by the gym and play a game of basketball, play video games, do arts and crafts, or just hang out.
  • Cooking Class
    Wednesdays, 5 p.m.
    Learn how to cook your favorite foods.
  • Crochet Class
    Thursdays, 5 p.m.
    Learn how to make unique creations by crocheting.
  • Chess Not Checkers
    Fridays, 5 p.m.
    Do you know how to play chess? Stop by to learn the game. Open to all levels.
  • Basketball Fridays
    Fridays, 6 p.m.
    Shoot some hoops in the gym and get ready for the weekend!

Green Teen Club: Ages 11-18
3rd Wednesday of each month @ 6-7 p.m.

Join the Green Teen Club at our Nature Center for exciting field trips, where teens delve into local ecosystems, hike scenic trails, and learn about conservation firsthand. Encounter fascinating wildlife, engage in hands-on activities, and discover your role in protecting our planet's biodiversity. Get involved in environmental justice initiatives and be a voice for positive change!

    The supervised teen lounge is the perfect place to hang out with friends playing table games, video games, and more. Daily activities include homework time and social interaction to encourage personal growth and success.

Teen Leadership

For teens by teens. This program is designed for youth to learn and practice leadership, citizenship, and life skills to empower them to become competent and productive members of society. Under the supervision of recreation staff and volunteers, all meetings are conducted by the Teen Advisory Board, a group of teens that are selected by their peers to design and organize meetings and monthly events. Teens will take part in weekly and monthly events including field trips, guest speakers, workshops, volunteer opportunities, games, and team-building exercises.

Teen Programs, Unlimited Possibilities

The City of Alexandria’s Department of Recreation, Parks, and Cultural Activities has partnered with YHELP! to provide free programs for teens ages 13 to 17. These offerings include arts workshops that promote self-esteem and goal setting, wellness activities focused on stress relief and self-care, and academic support that incorporates mental health strategies.

Held on Mondays and Wednesdays at 4 p.m. at Charles Houston

YHELP! Arts consist of weekly lesson plans, workshops, and collaborative projects that focus on self-esteem building, coping skills, and goal setting.

Held on Mondays at 6 p.m. at Patrick Henry and Fridays at 7 p.m. at William Ramsay

YHELP! Wellness Club is an opportunity for youth to destress, develop coping skills, and learn self-care. Activities include music, art, puzzles, yoga, meditation, and guest speakers.

YHELP! Scholars is an opportunity to apply mental health strategies to academics within the classroom. Activities include an overview of mental health awareness, mindfulness techniques, and coping strategies.
