Many residents have contacted City Council members and staff concerning Verizon’s upgrade of its lines in the City of Alexandria from copper wires to fiber optic cable. Over the next few years, this copper update will enable the deployment of Verizon Fios in the City of Alexandria to provide voice (landline telephone) and broadband internet.

What is Verizon Fios?

Fios is the brand name of Verizon’s ultra-high speed broadband service delivered using the company’s fiber optic network. The upgrade of Verizon’s lines in Alexandria from copper wires to the fiber optic network. The use of a fiber optic network is intended to improve the reliability of existing Verizon service and enable the deployment of Verizon Fios to Alexandria homes and businesses, including voice service and broadband Internet. Fios does not include wireless service.

What is the status of Fios in Alexandria?

In March of 2022, Verizon will begin updating its network in Alexandria with fiber optic lines to offer Fios internet and voice to the residents and businesses in the City of Alexandria. 

Completion of the Verizon network update is expected to span the next 3-4 years. The work will be done in small segments of the city to minimize disruption, and make Fios Internet and voice service available in Alexandria as the network is upgraded. What about current Verizon customers in Alexandria?

If you currently subscribe to Verizon landline voice telephone service, Verizon plans to transfer your service from the existing copper network to the fiber network over the next several years. You may continue to subscribe to the same Verizon voice service over Fios at the same price, terms, and conditions of your current service. Verizon will be in contact with existing customers when the Verizon network update has been completed in their area to start the transition process.
