Project Description

The City of Alexandria is working to reduce the risk of backyard flooding on the north side of S. Jordan Street between Venable Ave. and Holmes Run Pkwy. Flood mitigation measures will be implemented in two phases. Phase I will include minor repairs that will be completed by the Public Works team. Phase II will be more extensive and include improvements to the existing swale and storm water drainage.

Project Update Status

The City of Alexandria worked with a consultant to perform investigations, flood modeling, and analysis to determine ways to reduce the risk of backyard flooding on the north side of S. Jordan Street between Venable Ave. and Holmes Run Pkwy.

The analysis indicated that the flooding issue was effectively resolved during Phase I when the inlet opening in the storm sewer located along the rear property lines was plugged. In addition, the 4600 Duke Street Condominium repaired a damaged curb that had previously allowed stormwater to overflow from the condominium parking lot into the neighboring backyards.

Based on the completed study and modeling results, the City determined that the flooding concern has been adequately addressed. Therefore, the project will not advance to the design phase, and no further actions are required at this time.
