A DCHS CONNECT NEWS HIGHLIGHT

May 21, 2021--June is Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) Pride Month, and the Alexandria LGBTQ Task Force and Alexandria Library are hosting free, online Celebrate Alexandria Pride Workshops from June 3-5.

Workshop topics range from mental health and creative art programming to reflecting on white privilege in LGBTQ+ communities, the history of Black LGBTQ+ activism in the region, and older LGBTQ+ adults.  Participation is a way to celebrate, show support and stay connected during a time that is particularly challenging for LGTBQ+ people, who have faced unique challenges due to the pandemic. For more information about the workshops, presenters and how to register, visit alexandriava.gov/LGBTQ.

The workshop event is being held in lieu of the annual Alexandria Pride Fair, which was canceled this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

LGBTQ Pride Month is recognized each year to celebrate LGBTQ people and the influence they have had around the world, as well as to raise awareness of the challenges faced by the LGBTQ community. June was chosen as Pride Month to commemorate the Stonewall Rebellion in 1969. The Stonewall Inn tavern, in New York City, is considered by many to be the birthplace of the modern LGBTQ movement for equality.

Pride Month will also include a display of the Progress Pride Flags at Market Square (301 King St.) in front of City Hall. The Progress Pride Flag, a 2018 redesign of the Rainbow Pride Flag, was designed by Daniel Quasar and highlights BIPOC, transgender and nonbinary communities. The flags will be displayed at Market Square throughout June to show support for Alexandria’s LGBTQ residents and work toward equality for all.
