The severe thunderstorm warning and tornado warning have been canceled by The National Weather Service for the region, including the City of Alexandria, on Monday, August 7.

Dominion Energy is reporting power outages across Northern Virginia. These outages are storm related and the outage status will continue to fluctuate.  Restoration times are currently unavailable. Outages can be reported and viewed online at dominionenergy.com/outages or reported at 866.366.4357.

Services Available

Cooling centers, including recreation facilities, and library branches, are open under normal operating hours.

To report debris, down traffic signals, flooding, or other non-emergency items in the City, please utilize Alexandria’s customer service Alex 311 or call 703.746.4311. After 9 p.m. please call 703.746.4444.

For immediate police, fire, or emergency medical assistance, call or text 9-1-1.

Collecting Debris

The Department of Transportation and Environmental Services (T&ES) asks residents to set their large collections on the curbside in front of their homes and be aware of clearance above and around their piles of debris. These collections should not all go in one pile—please follow guidelines for separating debris below. This will allow City staff quicker access. Staff cannot collect with grapple trucks if there is no clearance from lines above.

Wires: Stay at least 30 feet away from any wires. Treat all wires as if they are electric wires and report them to Dominion Energy at 866.DOM.HELP (866.366.4357).

Street Lights and Poles: Please report damaged or inoperable streetlights to Dominion Energy. Include the pole number if you can safely read it.

Yard Waste: There is likely to be yard waste as cleanup progresses. Please place tree limbs and other larger pieces of yard waste next to trash cans and without blocking vehicles or pedestrians. Place smaller pieces in paper bags or containers with City-issued ‘Yard Waste’ stickers so crews can identify it. More information on how to properly prepare yard waste is available at alexandriava.gov/YardWaste.

House and Other Debris: Shingles, gutters, metal flashing, and more may have come off buildings during this storm. There are different disposal requirements depending on the material. See alexandriava.gov/RefuseCollection to learn how to handle larger pieces of debris.
