Resilient Streets & Systems
The Resilient Streets & Systems pillar focuses on strengthening the City’s core transportation infrastructure, both above and below ground, to ensure long-term durability, reliability, and readiness for emerging mobility technologies. This includes expanding Alexandria’s fiber-optic backbone, upgrading outdated field equipment, and modernizing the digital and physical systems that support daily operations. By investing in a more robust fiber network, the City can improve communications to traffic signals, sensors, cameras, and future connected-vehicle technologies. These upgrades also create a stronger foundation for advanced analytics, real-time system monitoring, digital twin applications, and seamless data exchange across departments.
Key Initiatives
- Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) - Deploying fiber, CCTV, and core infrastructure to enable real-time monitoring, system control, and data-driven operations.
- SMART Roadway Management - Testing technology to scan roadways, enabling proactive maintenance and a comprehensive digital asset inventory.
- T-Intersection Upgrades - Targeting safety improvements at high-risk T-intersections, including upgraded signage and signal infrastructure, and visibility enhancements reduce crashes and improve safety for all users.
- Adaptive Signal Control - Using real-time data to adjust timing based on traffic conditions, reducing delays and improving travel for drivers, buses, and emergency vehicles—especially during congestion and unexpected disruptions.
- Transportation Management Center (TMC) - Upgrading the technology at the City's TMC to monitor traffic signals, intersections, and roadways to proactively and manage traffic during special events, snow removal, emergencies, or other planned or unplanned events.
