The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather advisory for our area from 9 p.m. Wednesday evening until 10 a.m. Thursday morning.

Starting this evening, expect sleet, rain and freezing rain through the night. Ice accumulation of less than a 0.1 of an inch and sleet accumulation of less than a half inch possible. Overnight precipitation and subfreezing temperatures are likely to exacerbate hazardous road conditions.

Rain will continue through 1 p.m. on Thursday, February 6, with a small chance for more rain Thursday night.

Here is What the City is Doing:

  1. Transportation and Environmental Services (T&ES) has brined all critical roadways, with a focus on ice-prone areas such as hills, bridges, and overpasses.
  2. The Department of Recreation, Parks, and Cultural Activities (RPCA) have conducted pre-treatment activities at Alexandria City Public Schools and the Chinquapin Park Recreation Center, Metrorail stations, and City recreation facilities and will continue to monitor through Thursday.
  3. The Department of Community & Human Services (DCHS) Winter Shelter at 2355-A Mill Road has extended hours from Wednesday, February 5 at 7 p.m. until Thursday, February 6 at 12 p.m.

Here is What You Need to Know:

  • Commuters should plan ahead and allow for extra travel time.
  • Stay tuned to local media to stay informed of current weather conditions and forecasts.
  • Avoid driving if you are able. If you must use your car, make sure the car is adequately fueled, and you have a charged cell phone with you.
  • The latest road conditions for the state you are calling from can be obtained by calling 511.
