FY 26 Budget Q&A #069: What would it cost to offer a shuttle service one more day a week for residents who need to visit the Del Pepper building but who cannot navigate the walk from the Mark Center bus stop to the building?
Question: What would it cost to offer a shuttle service one more day a week for residents who need to visit the Del Pepper building but who cannot navigate the walk from the Mark Center bus stop to the building? (Councilman McPike)
Response:
Shuttle service between the Mark Center Transit Center and the Del Pepper Community Resource Center at 4850 Mark Center Drive is currently provided two times per week (Monday and Wednesday) eight hours per day at a cost of $715 per day, $1,430 per week (for 2 days), or $74,360 per year (52 weeks). The cost to add one additional day per week, eight hours per day, 52 weeks per year would be approximately $37,000 annually, based on the rate of the current shuttle service. The price estimate assumes a single vehicle to be on-site 9am-5pm one day per week, and is inclusive of labor, mileage, and maintenance; frequency of the shuttle would not impact the estimated cost.
City residents who cannot utilize public transportation or have difficulty navigating the walk from the Mark Center Transit Center due to a disability do currently have the option of utilizing the Alexandria DOT Paratransit Program from their residence to 4850 Mark Center Drive free of charge within the City of Alexandria or MetroAccess Paratransit for up to $4.00 per trip.
