City of Alexandria Prepares for Winter Weather: Annual Snow Removal Practice

As winter approaches, the City of Alexandria is continuing its year-round work to prepare for potential winter weather. A key part of this ongoing effort is the Department of Transportation & Environmental Services’ (T&ES) annual snow removal dry run, which will take place the morning of Friday, December 5, 2025. You may see snowplows and other winter response vehicles on City streets that morning. Please know that this activity is primarily a training exercise and not a response to an active storm. However, if the forecasted light snow does occur, crews may brine roadways as needed.

Exercises are an essential part of the City’s winter preparedness strategy, which give City crews the opportunity to refamiliarize themselves with equipment, routes, and safety procedures and more efficiently respond to winter weather events when the time comes. Exercise runs also allow T&ES to identify and address any maintenance or operational issues with City snowplows and winter weather equipment ahead of an actual weather event.

T&ES works closely with City officials and partners, including the Department of Recreation, Parks, and Cultural Activities (RPCA), the Department of General Services, and Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS), to ensure clear communication and unified snow removal operations. This teamwork supports safe travel around schools, parks, public buildings, and neighborhoods during winter weather events.

We ask drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians to exercise caution when encountering snowplows during the exercise. Even without snow or ice, please give operators ample space to maneuver safely.

Thank you for partnering with us to keep Alexandria prepared and resilient all winter long.
