Alexandria Health Department Releases 2025 Annual Report Highlighting Public Health Progress Despite Funding Cuts, Measles, and More
Alexandria Health Department (AHD) is proud to share the AHD 2025 Annual Report, showcasing a year of resilience and ongoing commitment to making Alexandria a healthier place for all.
The report details how AHD responded to disruptive challenges this year including sudden funding cuts, staff losses, disease outbreaks, and safety concerns in our communities.
Despite how these challenges impacted our staff as health officials and members of the community, AHD continued to deliver essential services that protect and promote Alexandria’s health. In 2025, AHD provided over 8,000 clinical services, gave over 6,300 vaccines, investigated more than 400 disease cases or outbreaks, processed 14,000 vital records, and completed 1,600 food safety inspections.
AHD also launched new initiatives, including a hand hygiene education partnership with Alexandria City Public Schools and free health literacy classes, and the department joined a multi-agency pilot food vendor permitting support program.
“This year challenged our staff and our community in unprecedented ways,” said AHD Health Director, Dr. David Rose. “Yet, together, we rose to meet these challenges with a foundation in community, science, and adaptability. Our shared dedication to health in Alexandria is stronger than ever.”
Highlights from 2025 featured in the report include:
- Community Health Work: Completed Alexandria’s newest Community Health Assessment and continued work on the Community Health Improvement Plan.
- Emergency Preparedness: Advanced emergency preparedness efforts, including targeted actions to address the threat of measles. Staff's preparedness work earned AHD the Project Public Health Ready Award.
- Community Engagement: Recorded over 5,000 community interactions through classes, meetings, and events, reflecting strong engagement across Alexandria.
- Healthy Homes Initiative: Released the Healthy Homes Action Plan and began developing city resources for mold and home issue reporting.
- Technology Integration: Secured funding for a full-time informaticist to modernize data systems and enhance service delivery.
