The City of Alexandria invites you to celebrate Building Safety Month with us during the month of May. The City’s Building Safety Month Kick-Off Event is May 1, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m., at Waterfront Park (1A Prince St.).

Building Safety Month is a time to celebrate our building safety professionals and highlight the work they do to keep our City safe. This year’s theme is “Built to Last.” Join us to raise awareness of the continuous efforts of our Code Administration Professionals!

Building Safety Month Kick-Off

Our Built to Last Kick-Off Celebration is free to attend and open to the public. Highlights include:

  • Free training opportunities for building safety professionals
  • Free food
  • Raffles and giveaways
  • Proclamation signing by Mayor Alyia Gaskins
  • Remarks by City Manager James Parajon
  • Special guest keynote
  • Educational exhibits from City departments and building safety stakeholders.

In the case of rain, this event will be located at the Del Pepper Community Resource Center (4850 Mark Center Dr.) in the first-floor café.

Why Building Safety Month Matters

Building Safety Month, sponsored by the International Code Council, highlights the importance of safe, sustainable buildings and connects residents, businesses, and visitors with the City’s code officials.

City code officials safeguard public infrastructure and services, protect residents from fires, severe weather, and structural hazards, and support sustainable economic growth through the adoption of modern building codes.

May is an opportunity for everyone to learn about the need for safe and sustainable structures where we live, work, and play.

The 2026 campaign theme is “Built to Last” and includes these special weekly themes:

  • Week 1: Safe Homes, Safe Communities (May 1-10) focuses on simple actions homeowners can take to improve safety at home.
  • Week 2: Voices of the Built Environment (May 11-17) spotlights building safety professionals and the roles they play in keeping communities safe.
  • Week 3: Prepared to Protect (May 18-24) encourages community preparedness and highlights how disaster-resilient building codes protect people and property.
  • Week 4: Communities Without Limits (May 25-31) showcases the importance of accessibility in building construction and design.
