What this means for you
If the street is renamed, the City will coordinate updates to street signs, land records, emergency services, and guide residents on the next steps. Some updates, such as changing addresses with banks, subscriptions, or other personal services, will need to be completed by residents.

Why Is this Street Being Renamed?
Iverson Street and others were named for Confederate figures, primarily following an Alexandria ordinance passed in 1953, which ruled that all streets running North-South in the city should be named for Confederate officers.
Today, City Council is working to build a more inclusive community. The City has launched a 15-year plan to rename or rededicate these streets while minimizing impacts to residents and businesses.
This effort is part of a long-term plan to rename or rededicate streets while minimizing impacts to residents and businesses. The April 30 hearing is part of Phase 2 of this initiative. City Council will make a final decision on the renaming of Iverson Street later in the spring.
City Council directed staff to study the renaming of Iverson Street in September 2025, based on research by the Historic Alexandria Research Committee and recommendations made by the City Council Naming Committee.
