This Public Health Week, AHD Shares Health Improvement Progress and Invites You to Join In!
The first week of April is National Public Health Week – a time where we recognize ways to promote health, protect well-being, and prepare communities for what’s next! As we celebrate, the Alexandria Health Department (AHD) and the Partnership for a Healthier Alexandria are highlighting the work happening now to create a healthier Alexandria.
Alexandria is currently developing our next Community Health Improvement Plan, a five-year plan designed to improve health in Alexandria. Based on findings from the most recent Community Health Assessment, the plan will focus on three priority areas: Landmark/Van Dorn, Arlandria, and citywide Mental Wellness.
It’s not too late for residents, business owners, faith leaders, and other community organizations to get involved. Here’s where each coalition is in the process:
- The Landmark/Van Dorn Coalition has come together several times, and members are currently voting on focus areas to prioritize their work.
- Join the coalition on April 18 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Patrick Henry Recreation Center for crafts and conversations about building a healthier Landmark/Van Dorn. The City’s Mobile Art Lab will offer free activities for all ages. RSVP to get creative and share what you think the coalition should focus on over the next five years!
- The Arlandria Coalition has held its initial meetings and is developing a vision statement and focus area ideas.
- The Mental Wellness Coalition has selected five focus areas for its work (listed online) and is forming smaller workgroups to design action steps.
To receive updates or get involved with any of the coalitions, sign up online. You do not need to have a background in health, public health, or making plans to make a difference.
“Public Health Week is about recognizing the people and efforts behind public health,” said AHD Director David Rose. “Our team here at AHD is always here to support our community, but when it comes to our city’s health, our community members are the experts because they live it every day. We depend on the people who live, work, and play here to help us create a healthier city for all.”
