Stay Safe: E-Bike & E-Scooter Safety Tips Every Resident Should Know

The popularity of electric bikes and electric scooters continues to grow, and for good reason. They’re convenient, efficient, and fun. But it’s important to remember that these devices are powered by lithium-ion batteries, which can pose a serious fire risk if not used or maintained properly. 

According to the National Fire Protection Association, damaged or improperly used batteries can overheat, catch fire, or even explode. These fires burn extremely hot and release toxic gases, making them especially dangerous. 

 

Charging Safety Tips: 

  • Only use batteries and chargers designed specifically for your device 
  • Never leave batteries charging unattended or overnight 
  • Stop charging once the battery is fully charged 
  • Charge one device at a time to avoid overloading outlets 
  • Keep batteries at room temperature. Avoid extreme heat or cold 

 

Storage & Handling: 

  • Store devices and batteries away from exits and flammable materials 
  • Keep batteries out of direct sunlight and hot vehicles 
  • Avoid exposure to water or liquids 
  • Keep out of reach of children 

 

Know the Warning Signs 

Stop using your e-bike or e-scooter immediately if you notice: 

  • Unusual odors 
  • Color changes 
  • Excessive heat 
  • Swelling or leaking 
  • Smoking or failure to hold a charge 

 

Repairs & Disposal: 

  • Always have repairs done by a qualified professional 
  • Never throw lithium-ion batteries in the trash 
  • Recycle batteries at approved recycling locations 

 

In Case of Fire 

If a battery fire occurs: 

  • Leave the building immediately 
  • Do NOT attempt to extinguish the fire 
  • Call 911 right away
