The City of Alexandria announces its intervention in the State Corporation Commission (SCC) proceeding related to the acquisition of Dominion Energy Inc., by NextEra Energy, Inc.
“The increasing cost of electricity is making it harder for Alexandria families to pay their bills. This acquisition will create the country’s largest utility company. The needs and interests of the millions of Virginians who will be impacted must be the top consideration in this process and prioritized above corporate interests,” said Mayor Alyia Gaskins. “The City has consistently advocated for full implementation of the clean energy and energy efficiency policies enacted by the General Assembly. This intervention builds on Alexandria’s history of leadership at the State Corporation Commission and presents an important opportunity to ensure that any acquisition supports, not weakens, that statutory framework while protecting Virginia customers.”
Intervening in the proceeding allows the City to provide expert testimony about the impacts of the proposed acquisition on Alexandrians and be an active participant in the hearing by questioning witnesses and engaging in any potential settlement discussions. The case will be heard starting on November 5 in Richmond at the SCC.
“State Corporation Commission proceedings are complicated, but they’re important. The City’s intervention in natural gas and water rate cases this year helped reduce rate increases by about $4.5 million annually just for Alexandria residents,” said Ryan Freed, the City’s Climate Action Officer. “These cases have impacts on how we live our lives, from our ability to pay our bills to the confidence the power will stay on during extreme weather events.”
The SCC is expected to rule by January 2027.
