Alexandria Health Department Encourages Residents to Join ALX Breathes for Asthma/COPD

Ver esto en español.

Alexandria Health Department (AHD) encourages eligible residents to enroll in ALX Breathes, a free, one-on-one program that helps tenants and homeowners with asthma or COPD breathe easier at home.

During ALX Breathes home visits, AHD health workers work alongside participants to identify and reduce asthma triggers like mold, ventilation issues, pests, and smoking. These visits are not a code inspection.

AHD educates residents and provides guidance and support. Participants receive free cleaning supplies, service referrals, educational resources, and coaching. After six months, participants can better manage their breathing.

The free ALX Breathes program is open to people who live in Alexandria, meet income requirements, and are diagnosed with asthma or COPD. Both homeowners and renters can participate. Non-eligible applicants can receive guidance and support over the phone on how to deal with common home condition issues. The program is currently available in both English and Spanish.

All Alexandria residents interested in ALX Breathes should fill out a short eligibility form or call 703.746.4988.

ALX Breathes is a program of the Healthy Homes Initiative, a project led by Alexandria City departments, community-based organizations, landlords, tenants, and homeowners to improve residents’ health at home.
