Alexandria Releases 2025 State of Health Report, Invites Community to Results-Sharing Event

Alexandria Health Department (AHD) released its 2025 State of Health Report capturing the results of the year-long Community Health Assessment (CHA). To build the report, AHD collected and analyzed data for over 200 health indicators, conducted a city-wide health survey, and gathered other community feedback.

Alexandria Health Department plans to share the report results throughout the summer, beginning with a 2025 State of Health Report Release Event at the Nannie J. Lee Recreation Center Tuesday, July 8, as detailed below.

What The Report Found

For the Community Health Assessment, AHD explored health indicators and community input across 14 different topic such as mental health, economic mobility, chronic conditions, and healthcare access.

“When taken as a whole, Alexandria appears to be doing well,” said AHD Population Health Manager Natalie Talis. “Many of our city’s health metrics are better than state and national benchmarks. But when we look at the data at a hyperlocal level, we see that certain Alexandria communities consistently have worse health outcomes than others.”

Decades of policy choices have built an Alexandria where some areas and residents have greater access to the resources and opportunities that support health. As a result, people living in specific neighborhoods, Black and Hispanic/Latino residents, and people with lower household incomes are at higher risk for worse health outcomes.

The CHA also reflects on progress made since our last community health assessment, conducted in 2019. Progress varied across topic areas. While some areas like insurance coverage and pediatric asthma hospitalization rates have improved, other areas like teenage cigarette smoking have worsened.

Finally, the report explored Alexandria’s strengths. Overwhelmingly, residents agree that our community’s relationships, diversity, and opportunities for involvement are our biggest asset to improve health.

“We can lean into our strengths as we improve our city’s health. We need everyone at the table to make this work,” said Talis.

How to See the Results

The 2025 State of Health Report is available online on Alexandria’s Community Health Assessment and Community Health Improvement Plan website. The online report is posted in English along with translations of the topic area overviews.

An interactive data dashboard that allows residents to explore data and maps by topic area is also posted online.

Alexandria Health Department invites the community to see and discuss the results at our 2025 State of Health Report Release Event.

Attend the 2025 State of Health Report Release Event on Tuesday, July 8 at 6:30 p.m. at the Nannie J. Lee Recreation Center (1108 Jefferson Street, Alexandria VA 22314). The event will feature a display of CHA results and our community health photo album, remarks from Mayor Alyia Gaskins, and a panel discussion about the data and what happens next. A free meal and interpreters will be available.

RSVP using the registration page.

What’s Next

With assessment results to guide us, AHD and the Partnership for a Healthier Alexandria will support our city in creating a Community Health Improvement Plan. We’ll select priorities together and brainstorm practical, community-designed strategies for next five years. Using this approach, our whole community can get to work and create an Alexandria that’s healthier for all.
