Alexandria, Va. – The City of Alexandria Police Department and Sheriff’s Office proudly announce the graduation of 18 police officers and 15 sheriff’s deputies from the Northern Virginia Criminal Justice Training Academy on Friday, June 16, 2023. The graduation took place at the Cornerstone Chapel in Leesburg, Va., where family, friends, and esteemed guests gathered to recognize the achievements of these dedicated individuals.

Among the graduates, APD and ASO extend special recognition to multiple outstanding recruits who graduated with honors, symbolizing their exceptional commitment and performance throughout the academy training. These individuals have demonstrated exemplary dedication and exemplify the highest standards of law enforcement professionalism.

APD Officer Michael Mattern earned the distinguished honor of receiving the Director’s Award for Academic Excellence for the highest overall score in the law enforcement academy. Ofc. Mattern also was the overall top performer in the firearms portion, shooting 100% in all three qualification courses. 

ASO Deputy Derek Mainville earned the Director’s Award for Academic Excellence for the highest overall score of the combined deputy and law enforcement school. Deputy Mainville also tied for second in Excellence in Emergency Vehicle Operations Course Award and third in the male physical fitness category. 

APD Officer Kurt Wiegand earned top honors for finishing first in physical fitness among men and performing over 300 straight push-ups, setting a new record for the academy. 

Police Chief Don Hayes and Sheriff Sean Casey commend all graduating officers and sheriff’s deputies for their unwavering commitment to serving and protecting the Alexandria community. 

The recruits will strengthen the City’s commitment to safeguarding Alexandria and fostering positive relationships with its diverse community.

The cohort completed 20 weeks of training, including emergency vehicle operations, firearms training, defensive and control tactics, crash investigation, de-escalation techniques, basic legal training, and other areas of study. Deputies also completed additional training in jail operations, courthouse security, and civil process.
