If your local business engages in sustainable practices, the City of Alexandria invites you to apply for recognition through its new Green Business Recognition Program.

The program, developed by the City’s Office of Climate Action, aims to recognize Alexandria's Eco-City Businesses that actively work to reduce energy and water consumption, minimize waste production, and offer opportunities for both employees and customers to make sustainable choices.

The Green Business Recognition Program’s launch is focused on shops and restaurants, but the Office of Climate Action will expand the program in 2024 to include additional business categories, such as hotels and offices.

The Office will accept applications on a rolling basis. Eligible businesses are encouraged to submit applications for the Green Business Recognition Program by Wednesday, November 15 to be able to include recognition in holiday promotions.

This fall, the City will hold workshops for interested business owners. The next workshop will be held Friday, November 3, from 8:15 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. at the Del Pepper Community Center, training room 1301 (4850 Mark Center Dr.). Workshop participants are encouraged to bring a laptop or internet-connected device. Check the program website for dates and locations of future workshops.

Businesses can apply for recognition at one of three levels: Bronze, Silver, or Gold. Once recognized, a business will receive physical and digital signage to display on its websites; be featured as a sustainable business on the City’s webpage; and gain access to support from the City regarding how to run a more sustainable business. Sustainable practices can also save money by lowering energy and water bills.

As the first locality to adopt an Eco-City Charter in 2008, the City of Alexandria has been at the forefront of progressive environmental action. The Green Business Recognition Program supports the Environmental Action Plan 2040 adopted by the Alexandria City Council in 2019.
