In the weeks following City Manager James Parajon’s presentation of the Fiscal Year (FY) 2025 Proposed Budget to the City Council and community, the City’s elected body has held several work sessions with City leaders to assess the current state of the City’s resources and programs. These conversations, along with feedback from the community during hearings and other engagements, inform councilmembers’ FY 2025 funding priorities.

In March, Council voted unanimously to set a real estate tax rate of up to $1.15 per $100 of assessed value; 4 cents above the current rate. This advertised max tax rate is the highest rate Council can adopt this budget process—meaning, they have up to an additional 4 cents of new revenue to fund any new programs or resources they deem necessary in the final budget.

The next milestone in the budget process is the Add/Delete period. This is the time Council, based on the ongoing discussions and work sessions, “adds” or “deletes” programs, services, or resources in the budget ahead of the final adoption on May 1.

Feedback from the community is critical to the budget process. The Add/Delete Public Hearing is on Saturday, April 13. All Alexandrians- homeowners, renters, established residents, and those new to Alexandria are encouraged to sign up and speak.

Opportunities to Engage

Before the maximum real estate tax is adopted, Alexandrians can also provide feedback through the Public Comment Form until April 29.
