The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a minor winter weather advisory for our region; it will remain in effect from 10 p.m. Friday, January 10 through 7 a.m. Saturday, January 11. NWS predicts an additional snow accumulation of one to two inches. Additionally, sub-freezing temperatures are expected through the week.

Here is how the City is responding:

  • The Transportation & Environmental Services Department (T&ES) is completing post-storm cleanup and actively preparing for snow accumulation to ensure all roads, including secondary and residential streets, remain fully cleared.
  • T&ES crews are pre-treating primary roads, bridges, overpasses, hills, and other critical areas with anti-icing brine and are planning for daytime snow mobilization on Saturday, January 11.
  • The Department of Recreation, Parks, and Cultural Activities (RPCA) will treat and pre-treat ice from this week’s earlier storm and additional snowfall expected beginning January 10.
  • The Department of Community & Human Services (DCHS) Winter Shelter at 2355-A Mill Road will operate with extended hours 24/7 until Monday, January 13. All residents may remain in the shelter until 7 a.m. on Monday, January 13.
  • RPCA recreation centers will also serve as warming centers during their normal operating hours. A full list of recreation centers is available here.

Prepare for winter weather:

  • With the weather expected to drop to dangerously cold temperatures, be prepared and know where you can go to get out of the cold. If in need of a place to warm up, consider visiting a restaurant, shopping mall, community center, or a local library.
  • Gather supplies in case you need to stay home for several days without power. Keep in mind each person’s specific needs, including medication and access to power.
  • If you have a pet, be sure to provide them access to a warm shelter, preferably indoors, as well as plenty of food and water.
  • Prepare your home to keep out the cold with insulation, caulking, and weather stripping. Keep pipes from freezing by allowing faucets to drip, keeping cabinet doors open, and garage doors closed.
