Decorative Letterhead indicating the below letter is directly from Mayor Alyia Gaskins

For many who call Alexandria home, recent events across the United States and in neighboring jurisdictions, have resulted in fear, confusion, and concern.  As your Mayor, I want to emphasize that Alexandria is committed to being a city where all residents are supported, respected, and valued. We will always be a community where all are welcome.

I understand many have questions about immigration enforcement. While Federal officers may take enforcement actions in our City, the City of Alexandria does not participate in federal immigration enforcement.  The City of Alexandria’s law enforcement officers do not participate in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (“ICE”) raids or arrests to enforce immigration laws. This applies to Alexandria police officers, deputy sheriffs and fire marshals.

We take seriously our responsibility to comply with federal and state law. The City also remains committed to upholding the civil rights of all individuals, regardless of immigration status.  I have the utmost confidence in our law enforcement officers. They will continue to carry out their duties with integrity—following the law and protecting the constitutional and civil rights of all people.

For more information on immigration enforcement in the City, please visit https://alexandriava.gov/Immigration.  Information on student and family resources can be found at the Alexandria City Public Schools’ Family & Community Resources webpage.

We take great pride in the fact that we are a community that cares about one another. Here in Alexandria, we will govern based on our values and facts. Our strength is in our ability to support one another and to uphold the values that make Alexandria the community we all choose to call home.

In the days ahead, please be assured that we will continue working for you and with you to keep you informed.

Sincerely,

The Mayor's signature

Alyia Gaskins
