City of Alexandria Names Ernesto Tamayo to Chief Labor Relations Officer Role

The City of Alexandria has appointed Ernesto Tamayo as its new Chief Labor Relations Officer. With more than a decade of experience in labor and employee relations at the federal level, Tamayo brings a deep understanding of collaborative workforce practices to the City’s leadership team.
“Ernie’s appointment reflects our deep commitment to building a thriving, inclusive, and engaged workforce,” said City Manager Jim Parajon. “He brings the kind of experience, empathy, and results-driven leadership that will strengthen how we show up for our employees, and by extension, our entire community. I chose Ernie because he knows that labor relations aren’t just policies, they’re about people. His leadership will help shape a culture where our workforce feels empowered and valued.”
Tamayo most recently served as Chief of Labor and Employee Relations at the U.S. Department of Transportation, where he implemented agency-wide labor strategies aligned with national initiatives. He is also a U.S. Army veteran and has held multiple labor relations roles in the U.S. Department of Defense.
In this role, Tamayo will lead the City’s collective bargaining program, developing strategy, guiding negotiations, and ensuring consistent, productive dialogue between the City and its workforce. Reporting to the City Manager, he will oversee labor relations policy, advise departments on labor practices, and help foster a fair, stable, and high-performing work environment.
