Updates from the Alexandria City Hall Renovation Project: Work Progress and Holiday Impacts
Work continues on the Alexandria City Hall and Market Square renovation. Here is the latest on progress and what it means for holiday events.
Same Holiday Traditions, New Locations
Since Market Square is under construction, some of our most popular holiday events will move to new locations for the upcoming holiday season. Find all the details of our holiday events at alexandriava.gov/Holidays.
1960s Infill Removal is Underway
Grunley Construction Company has made significant progress with the removal of the 1960s infill portion of City Hall. The current stage is the removal of the smokestack, which is part of the nonfunctioning boiler room.
The tall terra cotta boiler chimney is not original to the building. It was constructed between 1946 and 1947 when a courtyard was excavated for the boiler room. As part of City Hall’s new design, the mid-20th century structures in the courtyard are being removed to make room for more space for community events and City Hall offices.
