The Department of Recreation, Parks & Cultural Activities (RPCA) is actively evaluating the critical systems at Old Town Pool to address ongoing filtration issues affecting the main pool. As a result, Old Town Pool will be temporarily closed for the next three days. RPCA staff are working diligently to implement manual, chemical, and equipment-based solutions to restore proper filtration and ensure water quality.

Please be patient with us as we strive to ensure these technical issues get resolved indefinitely. Since there are extreme heat conditions with this temporary closure, we encourage swimmers to enjoy one of the City’s four other public pools Warwick, Memorial, Chinquapin, or Minnie Howard Aquatics facility. Alexandria residents may also visit the Durant Center (1605 Cameron Street) between the hours of 11:30 a.m. and 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday to pick up a complimentary day pass to Great Waves Waterpark. Passes are available in limited quantities on a first-come, first-served basis. For more information on how to get to the pool from where you are, visit dashbus.com/trip-planner-arrivals and capitalbikeshare.com.

Old Town Pool, originally constructed in 1975, has served the Alexandria community for nearly 50 years. It has long been slated for replacement through the City’s Capital Improvement Program (CIP). In response to rising construction costs, additional funding has been allocated, and construction is now scheduled for Fiscal Year 2027. The project is currently in the design phase.

“RPCA is working diligently to rehabilitate and revive Old Town Pool. It has been a staple in the community for decades, and we want to ensure it remains a part of the fabric of our growing city,” said RPCA Director Hashim Taylor.

RPCA continues to perform regular maintenance and repairs to ensure regulatory compliance and public safety. However, despite ongoing inspections and upkeep, the aging infrastructure at Old Town Pool presents growing challenges to maintaining consistent operations. As a result, the upcoming three-day closure will allow for critical repairs aimed at stabilizing pool operations for the remainder of the summer season.
