JULY 2025

Deputy Hernandez Named Employee of the Quarter

Congratulations to Deputy Hernandez on being selected our newest Employee of the Quarter! Deputy Hernandez was nominated by Sergeant Munir for her excellent collaboration and teamwork, success in a temporary administrative assignment, outstanding work ethic, enthusiastic and positive attitude, and willingness to apply her knowledge and skills to benefit the Office, even if it is outside of her standard duties. From translating signage into Spanish to serving on the Employee Awards committee to assisting with a critical accreditation project, Deputy Hernandez has excelled. She recently earned the position of Field Training Deputy and is already having a notable impact there. We’re proud of you, Deputy Hernandez!

Detention Center Welcomes Inova for HIV Outreach

The Sheriff’s Office values partnerships that help those in our custody, like Inova’s CHARLI (Comprehensive HIV/AIDS Resources and Linkages for Inmates) program. Public health professionals Deron Campbell and Grace Matthews regularly visit the Adult Detention Center to speak with residents about health education and prevention. Inmates can sign up for voluntary HIV testing and thanks to CHARLI, those who are positive can be connected to a case manager who will help develop a plan facilitating access to critical support when they are released.

Inmate Work Detail Active in Community

Our Inmate Work Detail, under the supervision of a senior deputy, often assists with projects at the Public Safety Center, like groundskeeping and moving furniture, as well as special jobs at the City facilities including the Archives and Records Center and Vola Lawson Animal Shelter. Recently the team has been hard at work keeping the community beautiful by cleaning up parks and public alleys and collecting litter along streets and sidewalks. Participants in the Work Detail appreciate the opportunity to contribute to the community and take pride in their work.

Public Invited to Remembrance Event for Benjamin Thomas

On August 8, 1899, a Black teenager being held at the old city jail was abducted, terrorized and lynched by a mob of assailants who were never brought to justice. Sheriff Sean Casey has apologized for our predecessors’ role in failing to protect young Benjamin Thomas and acknowledged law enforcement’s history of racial oppression. On the anniversary of Benjamin Thomas’s murder, the Alexandria Community Remembrance Project is holding a public program in his memory. Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Dr. Steven Hahn will present “Political Violence, Racial Terror and the Perpetual Struggle for American Democracy,” at 6:30 p.m. on August 8 at Shiloh Baptist Church (1401 Jamieson Avenue).
