The Alexandria Sheriff’s Office is now accepting applications for the Fall Community Academy. The community academy will begin on Saturday, September 19th, and runs for the next three Saturdays, concluding on October 10th. Each session will last approximately four hours.
Community Academy is an amazing way to learn the ins and outs of the Sheriff’s Office. Classes are a combination of presentations and interactive activities. Class topics will include jail operations, judicial and special operations, civil process and warrant service, as well as inmate services and programs. Participants will tour the Adult Detention Center and Alexandria Courthouse, interact with Sheriff’s Office vehicles and equipment, participate in simulator training scenarios, and meet ASO K9 Aida!
Participants must be 21 years of age or older and live or work in the City of Alexandria. You can learn more about the program, dates and times, and how to apply here: https://www.alexandriava.gov/academies/sheriffs-community-academy
National Night Out: Coming to a Neighborhood Near You on August 4th
Annual National Night Out is Tuesday, August 4th. National Night Out (NNO) is a celebration of community and public safety agencies coming together to promote community policing partnerships. National Night Out serves as a visible reminder that when neighbors know one another, stay engaged, and work alongside public safety agencies, communities become stronger, safer, and more resilient.
NNO is designed to increase crime prevention awareness, generate support for crime prevention programs, and send a message to criminals that neighborhoods are organized and are in partnership with law enforcement and public safety agencies to help prevent crime.
The Alexandria Sheriff’s Office will be joining in on the celebration and community connections with deputies at many participating locations.

Celebrating Milestones: Promotions and Retirements in July
The month of July was full of many celebrations, including two promotions and one retirement. On July 8th, Sheriff Casey promoted two deputies to the rank of sergeant: Deputy James and Deputy Canas. Both Sergeants James and Canas have been with the Alexandria Sheriff's Office since 2019. Their dedication to the Sheriff's Office and the community is exemplary. We are grateful for their continued service and wish them well as they take on their new roles and responsibilities as supervisors.
Additionally, on July 24th, Deputy Ohri officially retired from the Alexandria Sheriff’s Office. Deputy Ohri served with ASO for more than 22 years. He served with distinction at the Detention Center and in the Training and Logistics section as a Training Academy instructor. We wish him good luck as he enters this next exciting chapter!
Vacations & Home Safety: What are “Away from Home Checks” and How Can You Sign Up?
When it comes to planning a trip or a vacation, ensuring your home stays safe and secure while you’re away is top of mind for most community members. How can you ensure that your home remains secure and ready for your return while you’re gone? The Alexandria Sheriff’s Office offers a free service to help address this need with “Away from Home Checks.”
As a public service to residents, the Sheriff’s Office offers checks by deputies at the homes of people who are out of town. Residents may request the on-site checks by submitting an online form. Requests must be made at least a week before the resident will be away.
The “Away from Home Check” includes a visual survey of the home and outbuildings by a deputy while the resident is away. Depending on accessibility, it will likely include a physical check of doors and some windows. The entrance to the home must be directly accessible from street level.
