About Alexandria’s Flood Resilience Plan

In 2024, the City was awarded a grant from Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation through the Community Flood Preparedness Fund to support the development of a comprehensive Flood Resilience Plan, which will expand on the original 2021 Resilience Plan and the lessons learned from the Flood Action Alexandria program  to identify hazards and implement flood mitigation solutions.

Through this project, the City will assess the extent and severity of flooding affecting people who live and work in Alexandria by identifying areas for further study and interventions. This effort will lead to identification of priority flood prone areas, planning studies for those areas, the selection and design of a preferred solution, and construction.

In addition to launching an online survey for residents to share impacts of flooding with the City, staff also attended local farmers’ markets and other community events to learn how community members have been impacted by flooding. This feedback, along with input during the November community meeting, will help shape the plan. Everyone is encouraged to attend this meeting, provide information about flooding and learn about the Flood Resilience Plan.
