Spring of 2015, the Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities developed recommendations to improve Taney Avenue Neighborhood Park, 4149 Taney Avenue, after an extensive existing condition and use analysis, and community feedback in Fall 2014.  During this process we asked  "In 10 years I would like this Park to...."
The top three responses for Taney Avenue Park were:

  • Be a safe place for children to explore
  • Be a place to create social connections with neighbors
  • Provide opportunity to explore nature

Park Improvement Implementation

Spring of 2016, staff developed a conceptual site plan for Taney Avenue Park improvements based on the spring 2015 park recommendations.
Click here to see the Spring 2016 draft conceptual site plan.  We want to know if the proposed improvements meet your vision of what the park will be like in ten years.
Provide your feedback the following ways:

  •  Click here to take the survey
  • Attend an outdoor open house, at the park, 4149 Taney Avenue Park, on May 26, from 6:00pm -7:30pm.

We will meet at the existing picnic area and conduct a walking tour of the proposed improvements.
In the event of heavy rain or thunderstorm, the open house will be cancelled.

The public comment period will be open until June 1, 2016.

Please Note:  Pursuant to a Special Use Permit, the proposed play areas are docketed for Planning Commission and City Council Public Hearings on June 9 and June 18.

Project News

  • Construction on the second phase of improvements will begin the week of October 24, 2016 and includes the pre-school play area, picnic areas, and additional tree plantings and site furnishings. The new play areas are anticipated to open late fall 2016.
  • Rebuilding Together Alexandria and RunningBrooke held volunteer events at the park on September 13 and 17, 2016.  Over 120 volunteers participated in building trails, clearing brush, installing playground safety surfacing, planting 12 native trees, building birdhouses, and other much needed work!
  • The school age climbing structure began installation in early September, 2016.  Constructed of harvested Robinia wood, the unique Parkour climbing piece provides multiple options for children to build upper and lower body strength and coordination.
  • Invasive plant removal and brush clearing were initiated in late August and will continue throughout the fall season.  A follow-up treatment will be completed Spring/Summer 2017
  • On June 18, 2016  Alexandria City Council approved the Special Use Permit request to install children's apparatus play areas at Taney Avenue Park

Construction

Improvements may be constructed in several phases as resources and funds become available. Many of the park improvements are anticipated to be constructed fall 2016, in partnership with Rebuilding Together Alexandria and RunningBrooke. Check project news for more information.
