The City is excited to kick off Duke Street In Motion, a project focused on ensuring that transit improvements in the Duke Street corridor, from the Landmark Mall area to the King Street Metro Station, provide efficient transportation options that align with all users’ needs, wants, and expectations.

The City of Alexandria is implementing a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system along the Van Dorn/Beauregard corridor (West End Transitway) that will provide robust high-capacity transit operations between the Van Dorn Metrorail station, Landmark Mall, Shirlington Transit Center, Beauregard residential area and the Pentagon using a combination of dedicated and shared lanes.

The new Metroway premium transit service has begun with a strong start, raising weekday ridership to nearly 1,500 per day. This exceeds ridership of the 9S bus (the Crystal City/Potomac Yard shuttle, which was replaced by Metroway) by 50% and builds on unchanged 9A bus ridership (which also operates through the four Alexandria Metroway stations). In the ultimate configuration of the transitway, buses will operate between Pentagon City Metrorail and Braddock Road Metrorail stations in both exclusive and mixed-use lanes through Arlington County and the City of Alexandria.
