RAISE To Host Celebration Featuring a Documentary Screening on August 26
A DCHS CONNECT NEWS HIGHLIGHT
August 24, 2021--Residents and community members are invited to attend a community-wide virtual event to celebrate the second birthday of RAISE, Alexandria’s trauma-informed community network (TICN), on August 26, 10 a.m.-12 p.m.
The event will include a screening of Resilience, a one-hour documentary that delves into the science of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and the birth of a movement to treat and prevent toxic stress, as well as a brief orientation to RAISE and a discussion following the screening on what communities can do to prevent ACEs and toxic stress. Register for the event online.
Since 2019, RAISE has played a key role in building a stronger, more resilient trauma-informed community, increasing awareness of trauma and ACEs and advancing trauma-informed policy across the state. RAISE is one of 26 TICNs in the Commonwealth. Learn more about RAISE.
Over the past year, RAISE developed a number of helpful tools for individuals and organizations, including:
-
Raise Your Voice to Help Neighbors at Risk of Abuse: How to recognize signs of abuse in children and adults. View or download the flyer in English, Spanish, Amharic, or Arabic and share with your network.
-
Resiliency Resources For Supervisors: A toolkit designed to help supervisors and their staff understand the mental health impact of COVID-19 and challenges associated with returning to the workplace.
-
Online Trauma-Informed Agency Self-Assessment: An tool created by Virginia HEALS that provides a starting place for agencies and systems from a variety of fields to assess where they fall in a continuum of trauma-informed care and to engage them in a process of setting agency improvement goals; RAISE made the assessment available as an online survey.
RAISE also supported and hosted numerous events. In May, RAISE hosted the first annual Alexandria Trauma and Resiliency Summit, a virtual community-wide event that featured 15 workshops focused on race and social justice, navigating environments and build resilience through wellness. RAISE also supported and participated in state-wide efforts, like Resilience Week Virginia and Racial Truth and Reconciliation Week events, and participated on panels for several events, including an Afterschool Alliance webinar series. RAISE co-coordinators were also interviewed for United Way’s The Way Forward podcast.
September 28-30, RAISE will host Train-the-Trainer ACE Interface, which will expand the capacity of the TICN’s training team by equipping individuals to present the ACE Interface Understanding Adverse Childhood Experiences: Building Self-Healing Communities curriculum in their respective communities and organizations.
