September 10, 2026 

The Alexandria City Council is seeking applicants to fill the vacancies on City of Alexandria boards, commissions, and committees. Council will act on these vacancies at the October 13, 2026, City Council meeting.  All applicants must complete a Personal Data Record form electronically via the City’s website at www.alexandriava.gov/Boards  no later than 5:00 p.m. on October 2, 2026. Applications received after this deadline will not be forwarded to City Council.  Applicants may only submit an application for one committee at a time.
 

MULTIPLE or DUPLICATE APPLICATIONS WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED. 

Please note the meaning of the following terminology related to board vacancies:

Expiring Term – denotes a current member's term will be ending soon.  There may or may not be an incumbent applying for the position.

Expired Term - denotes a term completed and no one is in the position.

 

Alexandria Gang Prevention Community Task Force – 3-year term

Meeting Schedule: Task Force meets quarterly. 

Two vacancies for consideration:

One citizen member, due to an expiring term.

One member from and representing Alexandria Redevelopment and Housing Authority or a resident of Alexandria Redevelopment and Housing Authority-managed properties, due to administrative action. 

 

Alexandria Housing Affordability Advisory Committee – 3-year term

Meeting Schedule: first Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m. 

One vacancy for consideration:

One commissioner from the ARHA board, due to a resignation. 

 

Alexandria Transportation Commission – 3-year term

Meeting Schedule: third Wednesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. 

Seven vacancies for consideration:

One citizen member who shall be a resident residing East of Quaker Laner possessing qualifications in land-use, transportation and/or municipal finance, due to expiring term.

One citizen member who resides east of Quaker Lane, due to expiring term.

One citizen member, who shall be a resident of the city between the ages of 16 and 25, possessing an interest in or knowledge of transportation and land use planning issues, due to code change.

One member from the Commission on Aging or the Commission on Persons with Disabilities, nominated by the Commission, or their nominee, due to code change.

One member from the Alexandria Transit Company Board of Directors, nominated by the Board or a nominee of the board, due to a resignation.   

Two members from the Planning Commission, nominated by the Commission, due to a resignation. 

 

Alexandria-Caen Sister City Committee – 2-year term

Meeting Schedule: second Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m.

Four vacancies for consideration:

Four citizen members, due to resignations and expiring terms. 

 

Archaeological Commission – 4-year term

Meeting Schedule: third Wednesday of each month at 7:00p.m. 

Four vacancies for consideration:

One member from the Alexandria Business Community, due to an expiring term.

One member from the Alexandria Historical Society, due to an expiring term.

One member from the Alexandria Society for the Preservation of Black Heritage or an equivalent organization, due to an expiring term. 

One Visit Alexandria representative or a representative of tourism; due to a resignation and code change.

One citizen member from Planning District II, due to a resignation.

 

Beautification Commission – 2-year term

Meeting Schedule: second Thursday of each month at 7:30 p.m. 

Three vacancies for consideration:

One member shall be a Master Gardener, Master Naturalist, or Tree Steward, due to an expiring term.

One citizen member, due to an expired term. 

 

Board of Zoning Appeals – 4-year term

Meeting Schedule: second Monday of the month at 7:00 p.m.

One vacancy for consideration:

One citizen member, due to an expiring term

 

Budget and Fiscal Affairs Advisory Committee – 2-year term

Meeting Schedule: third Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m.

Three vacancies for consideration:

Three members designated by City Council as representatives, due to expired terms.

 

Building Code Board of Appeals - 5-year term

Meeting Schedule: meetings are called when appeals are filed.

Two vacancies for consideration:

Two alternate members, due to administrative action and an expired term. 

 

Children, Youth and Families Collaborative Commission – 3-year term

Meeting Schedule: second Wednesday of each month from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m.

Five vacancies for consideration:

One high school student (one-year term), due to expiring term.

One community members with expertise in children, youth and family issues, public safety, medical/health related profession or non-profit experience. due to an expiring term.

One member of City staff, identified by the City Manager, due to a resignation.

One ACPS member, identified by the Superintendent, due to an expiring term.

One young adult member, due to an expired term. 

 

Citizen Corps Council – 3-year term

Meeting Schedule: fourth Monday of every other month.

Three vacancies for consideration:

One representative of the Business Community, due to an expired term.

One representative from Commission on Persons with Disabilities, due to an expired term.     

One citizen designated by an Alexandria School Board member, due to an expired term.

 

Commission for the Arts – 3-year term

Meeting Schedule: third Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m. 

One vacancy for consideration:

One professional in fields relevant to arts and cultural development, including cultural planning, marketing, finance, funding, tourism, promotion, nonprofit organizational development, and real estate development, due to an expiring term.

 

Commission for Women – 3-year term

Meeting Schedule: second Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m.

One vacancy for consideration:

One citizen member, due to a resignation.

 

Commission on Aging – 3-year term

Meeting Schedule: second Thursday of every month at 4:00 p.m.

Two vacancies for consideration: 

One citizen member who is 60 years of age or older, due to an expiring term. 

One representative of older persons, due to a resignation.

 

Commission on Employment – 2-year term

Meeting Schedule: second Tuesday of each month at 8:00 a.m. 

Two vacancies for consideration: 

Two representatives from a recognized area business including minority-owned and small businesses, due to expired terms and administrative action. 

 

Commission on Information Technology – 3-year term

Meeting Schedule: meets on the second or third Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m.

Two vacancies for consideration:

One ACPS high school student, due to an expired term.

One member from and representing the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce, due to a resignation.

 

Commission on Persons with Disabilities – 2-year term

Meeting Schedule: meets at 7:00 p.m. on the second Wednesday of every month.

Three vacancies for consideration:

One citizen member, due to an expiring term.

One representative of the Alexandria Commission on Aging, due to an expired term.

One Chamber of Commerce business representative, due to an expired term.

 

Community Policy and Management Team – 2-year term

Meeting Schedule: fourth Wednesday of the month at 2:00 p.m. 

One vacancy for consideration:

One representative of a private organization or association of providers of children’s or family services which provides such services within the City on a continuing or consistent basis, due to a resignation. 

 

Community Services Board – 3-year term

Meeting Schedule: second Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m.

Two vacancies for consideration:

One consumer member currently receiving service, due to an expired term.

One citizen member, due to an expiring term.

 

Economic Opportunities Commission – 2-year term

Meeting Schedule: third Wednesday of the month at 7:00 p.m. 

Three vacancies for consideration:

One Category I - elected public officials currently holding office, or their representative, due to expired term.

Two Category II - representatives of residents living with low income and/or from historically marginalized communities in the City certified by the Commission, due to expired term.

 

Environmental Policy Commission – 2-year term

Meeting Schedule: third Monday of the month at 7:30 p.m.

Two vacancies for consideration: 

One member with experience in federal or state environmental statutes, regulations and procedures (preferably an attorney), due to an expiring term.

One member from the field of environmental sciences (e.g. environmental/sanitary engineering, ecology, geology, botany, hydrology, chemistry) or who have Alexandria waterfront expertise, due to an expiring term.

 

George Washington Birthday Celebration Committee – 2-year term

Meeting Schedule: third Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m. 

Seven vacancies for consideration:

One citizen member, due to an expiring term.

One member nominated by the George Washington Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution, due to an expiring term.

One member nominated by the American Legion, due to an expiring term.

One City manager or a designee, due to an expired term.

One member to be nominated by the City of Alexandria Pipe and Drums, due to an expired term.

One Director of the Transportation Division of the Department of Transportation and Environmental Services, due to administrative action. 

One member to be nominated by the Gadsby's Tavern Museum Society, due to an expired term. 

 

Historic Alexandria Resources Commission – 2-year term

Meeting Schedule: third Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. 

Seven vacancies for consideration: 

One member representing historic houses of worship - congregations, or sites which have played a significant role in the diverse cultural, social, and religious history of the city, due to an expiring term. 

One representative of Carlyle House, due to an expiring term.

One Planning District III representative, due to an expired term. 

One Alexandria Society for Preservation of Black Heritage representative or an equivalent organization, due to an expired term.

One OHA Friends Group representative, due to an expired term.

One representative from George Washington Masonic National Memorial Association, due to an expired term.

One representative from the Alexandria Public Records Advisory Commission, due to an expired term. 

 

Historic Restoration & Preservation Commission – 4-year term 

Meeting Schedule: second Wednesday of each month at 8:00 a.m. 

One vacancy for consideration:

One citizen member, due to administrative action. 

 

Human Rights Commission – 3-year term

Meeting Schedule: third Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m. 

Two vacancies for consideration:

One Commission on Persons with Disabilities representative, due to an expiring term.

One Commission for Women representative, due to an expired term.

 

Independent Community Policing Review Board – 3-year term

One vacancy for consideration:

One member who represents an organization, office, or agency that seeks racial or social justice or that otherwise advocates on behalf of historically, racially, or socially marginalized communities, particularly communities that may have experienced disparate policing, due to a resignation. 

 

Local Emergency Planning Committee – 2-year term

Meeting Schedule: at the call of the Chair quarterly. 

Three vacancies for consideration: 

Two owner and operator of facilities subject to the federal emergency planning requirements of Super Fund Amendments and reauthorization Act of 1986 (SARA), due to expired terms.

One representative of broadcast and print media, due to a resignation. 

 

Park and Recreation Commission – 3-year term

Meeting Schedule: third Thursday of the month at 7:00 p.m.

One vacancy for consideration:

One member representing Planning District I, due to an expiring term. 

 

Potomac Yard Design Advisory Committee – 2-year term

Meeting Schedule: at the call of the Chair. 

Four vacancies for consideration: 

One member who represents the Potomac West area, due to an expiring term.

One member who represents the Potomac East area, due to an expired term.

One National Park Service representative, due to an expired term.

One member representing the Potomac Yard area, due to an expired term.

 

Public Health Advisory Commission – 2-year term

Meeting Schedule: third Thursday of the month at 5:30 p.m.

Four vacancies for consideration:

One representative, advocate, or provider of services for individuals and communities impacted by HIV/AIDS, due to a code change.

One Physician practicing in the City, nominated by the Medical Society of Northern Virginia, due to an expired term.

One representative from the Alexandria City School Board, nominated by such board, due to a resignation. 

One citizen member, who shall be health professionals and at the time of appointment derive, or within the previous five years derived, their principal income from providing health care, health services or health related activities, due to an expiring term. 

 

Public Records Advisory Commission – 2-year term

Meeting Schedule: first Tuesday of the month at 7:30 p.m.

One vacancy for consideration:

One citizen member, due to a resignation. 

 

Real Estate Assessments Review Board – 2 year term

Meeting Schedule: three times per week from June through December at the call of the Chairman.

One vacancy for consideration:

One citizen member, due to a resignation.

 

Social Services Advisory Board – 3-year term

Meeting Schedule: third Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m. 

Five vacancies for consideration:        

One client of the Department of Social Service, due to expired term.

Four Parent members, due to expired terms and resignations. (may also be filled by citizen representatives)

 

Urban Design Advisory Committee – 2-year term

Meeting Schedule: semi-annual meetings, with additional meetings scheduled on the first Wednesday of the month on an as-needed basis.

One vacancy for consideration:

One resident representing the Old Town North residential community, due to an expiring term. 

 

Waterfront Commission – 2-year term

Meeting Schedule: third Tuesday of the month at 7:30 a.m.

Three vacancies for consideration:

One representative from the Alexandria Park and Recreation Commission, due to an expired term. 

One Old Town Civic Association representative, due to a resignation.

One representative from the pleasure boat lease holders at Alex. Marina, due to a resignation.
 

Applicants may only submit an application to one committee at a time.

Applicants must comply with City Ordinance No. 2452, which states that no appointee shall reside outside of the City of Alexandria unless a residency wavier is granted by Council, and City Ordinance No. 2641, which states that City employees may not apply for vacancies on boards, commissions, and committees that relate to the responsibilities of the department in which they are employed.
