The Alexandria City Council is seeking applicants to fill the vacancies on City of Alexandria boards, commissions, and committees. Council will act on these vacancies at the May 12, 2026, City Council meeting. All applicants must complete a Personal Data Record form electronically via the City’s website at www.alexandriava.gov/application no later than 5:00 p.m. on May 1, 2026. Applications received after this deadline will not be forwarded to City Council. Applicants may only submit an application for one committee at a time.
MULTIPLE or DUPLICATE APPLICATIONS WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED.
Please note the meaning of the following terminology related to board vacancies:
Expiring Term – denotes a current member's term will be ending soon. There may or may not be an incumbent applying for the position.
Expired Term - denotes a term completed and no one is in the position.
Alexandria Gang Prevention Community Task Force – 3-year term
Meeting Schedule: Task Force meets quarterly.
Two vacancies for consideration:
One member from and representing Alexandria Redevelopment and Housing Authority or a resident of Alexandria Redevelopment and Housing Authority-managed properties, due to administrative action.
One member from and representing the parents of youth of the City of Alexandria, due to an expired term.
Alexandria Housing Affordability Advisory Committee – 3-year term
Meeting Schedule: first Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m.
Two vacancies for consideration:
One commissioner from the ARHA board, due to a resignation.
One financial professional with knowledge and experience in the field of finance, due to an expiring term
Alexandria Transportation Commission – 3-year term
Meeting Schedule: third Wednesday of each month at 7:00 p.m.
Two vacancies for consideration:
One member from the Alexandria Transit Company Board of Directors, nominated by the Board, due to a resignation.
One member from the Planning Commission, nominated by the Commission, due to a resignation.
Archaeological Commission – 4-year term
Meeting Schedule: third Wednesday of each month at 7:00p.m.
Two vacancies for consideration:
One Visit Alexandria representative, due to a resignation.
One citizen member from Planning District II, due to a resignation.
Board of Zoning Appeals – 4-year term
Meeting Schedule: second Monday of the month at 7:00 p.m.
Two vacancies for consideration:
Two citizen members, due to expiring terms
Budget and Fiscal Affairs Advisory Committee – 2-year term
Meeting Schedule: third Tuesday of the month at 7:00 p.m.
Three vacancies for consideration:
Two members designated by City Council as representatives, due to expired terms.
One member designated by the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce, due to a resignation.
Building Code Board of Appeals - 5-year term
Meeting Schedule: meetings are called when appeals are filed.
Two vacancies for consideration:
Two alternate members, due to administrative action and an expired term.
Children, Youth and Families Collaborative Commission – 3-year term
Meeting Schedule: second Wednesday of each month from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m.
Two vacancies for consideration:
One member of City staff, identified by the City Manager, due to a resignation.
One member shall be community members with experience as parents, guardians, teachers and/or expertise in early childhood, youth or general education policy (approved by the Alexandria School Board), due to an expired term.
Citizen Corps Council – 3-year term
Meeting Schedule: fourth Monday of every other month.
Three vacancies for consideration:
One representative of the Business Community, due to an expired term.
One representative from Commission on Persons with Disabilities, due to an expired term.
One citizen designated by an Alexandria School Board member, due to an expired term.
Commission on Aging – 3-year term
Meeting Schedule: second Thursday of every month at 4:00 p.m.
Two vacancies for consideration:
One representative from the Commission for Women, due to a resignation.
One citizen member who is 60 years of age or older, due to an expiring term.
Commission on Employment – 2-year term
Meeting Schedule: second Tuesday of each month at 8:00 a.m.
Four vacancies for consideration:
Four representatives from a recognized area business including minority-owned and small businesses, due to expired terms and administrative action.
Commission on Information Technology – 3-year term
Meeting Schedule: meets on the second or third Thursday of each month at 7:00 p.m.
One vacancy for consideration:
One member from and representing the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce, due to a resignation.
Commission on Persons with Disabilities – 2-year term
Meeting Schedule: meets at 7:00 p.m. on the second Wednesday of every month.
Three vacancies for consideration:
One representative of the Alexandria Commission on Aging, due to an expired term.
One Chamber of Commerce business representative, due to an expired term.
One citizen member, due to an expired term.
Community Criminal Justice Board – 2-year term
Meeting Schedule: first Thursday of each month at 4:00 p.m.
Four vacancies for consideration:
One representative of the business community recommended by the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce, due to an expired term.
One representative of non-profit organizations recommended by the Alexandria United Way, due to an expired term.
Two citizen members, due to expiring terms.
Community Policy and Management Team – 2-year term
Meeting Schedule: fourth Wednesday of the month at 2:00 p.m.
Two vacancies for consideration:
One parent representative who is not an employee of any public or private program which receives funds from the Children’s Services Act, due to a resignation.
One representative of a private organization or association of providers of children’s or family services which provides such services within the City on a continuing or consistent basis, due to a resignation.
Community Services Board – 3-year term
Meeting Schedule: second Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m.
One vacancy for consideration:
One consumer member currently receiving service, due to an expired term.
Economic Opportunities Commission – 2-year term
Meeting Schedule: third Wednesday of the month at 7:00 p.m.
Two vacancies for consideration:
One Category III – representative of business industry, labor, religious, welfare or other private groups and interests certified by the commission, due to a resignation.
One Category II - representatives of residents living with low income and/or from historically marginalized communities in the City certified by the Commission, due to an expired term.
George Washington Birthday Celebration Committee – 2-year term
Meeting Schedule: third Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m.
Five vacancies for consideration:
One City manager or a designee, due to an expired term.
One member to be nominated by the City of Alexandria Pipe and Drums, due to an expired term.
One Director of the Transportation Division of the Department of Transportation and Environmental Services, due to administrative action.
One member to be nominated by the Gadsby's Tavern Museum Society, due to an expired term.
One citizen member, due to a resignation.
Historic Alexandria Resources Commission – 2-year term
Meeting Schedule: third Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m.
Seven vacancies for consideration:
One Planning District III representative, due to an expired term.
One Alexandria Society for Preservation of Black Heritage representative or an equivalent organization, due to an expired term.
One OHA Friends Group representative, due to an expired term.
One representative from George Washington Masonic National Memorial Association, due to an expired term.
One representative from the Historic Alexandria Foundation, due to a resignation.
One representative from the Alexandria Public Records Advisory Commission, due to an expired term.
One representative from the Northern Virginia Fine Arts Association, due to an expiring term.
Human Rights Commission – 3-year term

One Landlord Tenant Board representative, due to a resignation.

Independent Community Policing Review Board – 3-year term
Two vacancies for consideration:
One member who represents an organization, office, or agency that seeks racial or social justice or that otherwise advocates on behalf of historically, racially, or socially marginalized communities, particularly communities that may have experienced disparate policing, due to a resignation.
One citizen member, due to an expired term.
Industrial Development Authority – 4-year term

Local Emergency Planning Committee – 2-year term
Meeting Schedule: at the call of the Chair quarterly.
Five vacancies for consideration:
Two owner and operator of facilities subject to the federal emergency planning requirements of Super Fund Amendments and reauthorization Act of 1986 (SARA), due to expired terms.
Two community group representatives, due to a resignation and an expiring term.
One representative of broadcast and print media, due to a resignation.
Potomac Yard Design Advisory Committee – 2-year term
Meeting Schedule: at the call of the Chair.
Three vacancies for consideration:
One member who represents the Potomac East area, due to an expired term.
One National Park Service representative, due to an expired term.
One member representing the Potomac Yard area, due to an expiring term.
Public Health Advisory Commission – 2-year term
Meeting Schedule: third Thursday of the month at 5:30 p.m.
Three vacancies for consideration:
One Physician practicing in the City, nominated by the Medical Society of Northern Virginia, due to an expired term.
One representative from the Alexandria City School Board, nominated by such board, due to a resignation.
One representative from the Inova Alexandria Hospital, nominated by the Hospital, due to a resignation.
Public Records Advisory Commission – 2-year term
Meeting Schedule: first Tuesday of the month at 7:30 p.m.
One vacancy for consideration:
One citizen member, due to a resignation.
Social Services Advisory Board – 3-year term
Meeting Schedule: third Monday of each month at 7:00 p.m.
Five vacancies for consideration:
One client of the Department of Social Service, due to expired term.
Two Parent members, due to an expired term and a resignation.
Two citizen members, due to resignations.
Visit Alexandria Board of Governors – 3-year term
Meeting Schedule: third Monday of the month in July, October, November, January, March, May, and June.
Five vacancies for consideration:
One Historic/Preservation Representative, due to an expiring term.
One Restaurant Owner/Manager Representative, due to an expiring term.
One member to come from any of the 4 categories (Hotel, Restaurant, Association or Retail), due to an expiring term.
One At Large member, due to an expiring term.
One Hotel Owner/Manager Representative, due to an expired term.
Waterfront Commission – 2-year term
Meeting Schedule: third Tuesday of the month at 7:30 a.m.
Two vacancies for consideration:
One representative from the Alexandria Archaeological Commission, due to an expired term.
One representative from the Alexandria Park and Recreation Commission, due to an expiring term.
Applicants may only submit an application to one committee at a time.
Applicants must comply with City Ordinance No. 2452, which states that no appointee shall reside outside of the City of Alexandria unless a residency waiver is granted by Council.
