On Tuesday, November 28, Alexandria City Council unanimously voted to expand the City of Alexandria's housing production, improve affordability, and address past and current barriers to equitable housing access through a series of proposals.

“The decision to take on this effort and see it through was driven both by my inner values and moral identity given that too many Alexandrians struggle to rent, own, and live here in our City,” said Mayor Justin Wilson. “I was therefore very pleased and honored to join my colleagues on City Council in approving these reforms unanimously and fully.”

City Manager James Parajon spoke about the impact the housing reforms will have.

“These reforms, while modest in terms of anticipated number of units, will augment existing City programs and policies to help meet the varied housing needs of Alexandria residents,” he said. “With last night’s guidance from City Council, staff will now shift to tracking the progress of these reforms to ensure that goals are realized, that implementation fits with the context of communities, and that equity is applied so that those who need these resources receive them in a fair and just way.”

The Zoning for Housing/Housing for All Initiative began in 2020 and is in alignment with the January 2022 City Council priority to “reconsider our zoning model and pursue other tools to facilitate an Alexandria housing economy that provides the necessary range of price points, safe and sustainable housing options, and the associated services to meet the needs of a thriving City.”
