South Patrick Street Median Improvement Project
Project Summary
Phase: Design
Status: Active
Location: Southwest Quadrant
Managing Dept.: Project Implementation
Sponsor Dept.: Transportation & Environmental Services
Project Description
The City of Alexandria is upgrading the existing median along South Patrick Street between (approximately) Wolfe Street and Jefferson Street to improve pedestrian safety and calm to flow of traffic through the corridor by widening it, adding street trees and pedestrian refuge areas, and the existing travel lanes will be narrowed to calm traffic along the corridor. Curb ramp upgrades, additional crosswalks and pedestrian signals, and crossing improvements will be included. The streetscape outside of the curb will be constructed as development occurs. The project was recommended in the South Patrick Street Small Area Plan and helps to break down the barrier between the communities on the east and west side of Route 1, stitching together these communities with safe access and connections.

Willingness to Host a Public Hearing
U.S. Route 1 South Median Refuge Island Project
VDOT UPC #119088
COA PROJECT #20734
The City of Alexandria is proposing to widen the median along U.S. Route 1 (South Patrick Street) between Wolfe Street and Jefferson Street to improve pedestrian safety and calm the flow of traffic throughout the corridor. This will be achieved by widening the median from four feet to nine feet and reducing the existing travel lanes from 12 feet to 11 feet. Pedestrian refuge areas will be added at each intersection, street trees will be planted in the median, and the existing curb ramps, pedestrian signals, and crosswalks will be updated.
This project was developed in coordination with the community during South Patrick Street Housing Affordability Strategy engagement efforts. The proposed design will improve access between the neighborhoods on both sides of U.S. Route 1 by providing shorter, safer crossings for pedestrians, and creating a gateway into the City that slows traffic around these neighborhoods.
This project is funded by a federal grant administered by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT).
The following project plans are available for review by clicking on the links below or in-person at City Hall, 301 King Street, Suite 3200, in Alexandria, VA.
