Forty years ago today, the first DASH bus rolled onto the City of Alexandria’s streets. Since then, DASH has grown alongside the city, becoming an integral part of its history and a vital resource for its residents.

“DASH is a shining example of how public transportation can improve the lives of residents and contribute to a thriving city,” said Mayor Justin Wilson. “Congratulations to DASH on this milestone anniversary, and here’s to many more years of success.”

In the four decades since March 11, 1984, DASH has evolved and adapted its routes and offerings to meet the changing needs of our community. Today, DASH offers fare-free service with a growing fleet of 100% electric buses, reflecting Alexandria’s commitment to sustainability and equitable access for all.

“For 40 years, DASH has been the backbone of Alexandria’s transportation infrastructure,” said Josh Baker, General Manager/CEO of DASH. “We are incredibly proud of the role we’ve played in connecting people to jobs, education, and all that Alexandria has to offer. We look forward to continuing to innovate and serve the community for many years to come.”

DASH has fostered economic development, improved traffic, and provided a sustainable transportation option for Alexandria residents and visitors.

“It’s an honor to celebrate this significant milestone,” said David Kaplan, Chairperson of the DASH Board of Directors. “We are grateful to the dedicated staff, past and present, who have made DASH the success it is today. Their commitment to excellence has ensured that DASH remains a vital resource for our community.”

To extend the celebration of DASH’s 40th birthday and express appreciation to its loyal riders, DASH will be hosting a series of pop-up events throughout Alexandria this week. The events will be held in various locations, including the West End, Old Town, Arlandria, Del Ray, Potomac Yard, and more. These pop-up events offer a chance for riders to interact with DASH staff, learn more about future plans, and share their experiences.

In other birthday news, residents and visitors will also have the opportunity to celebrate the city of Alexandria, which is celebrating its 275th anniversary in July of this year. From April through September, we invite our community and visitors to join us for fun and engaging birthday events. Join us on our journey at alexandriava.gov/ALX275.
