The City of Alexandria will begin relocating City services and employee offices in August 2025 to prepare for major renovations to City Hall and Market Square. Relocations will continue through the end of 2025, with renovations beginning in January 2026.

Summer 2025 Relocation Schedule

  • August 21: The Office of Housing will temporarily move from 421 King St., Suite 215 to 100 N. Pitt St., Fourth Floor
  • September 25: The Department of Finance’s Real Estate Division will temporarily move from City Hall to 100 N. Pitt St., Second Floor. The Real Estate Board of Equalization will continue to hold meetings at City Hall through the end of 2025.
  • September 26: The following Code Administration divisions still located at City Hall will permanently relocate to 4850 Mark Center Dr., Second Floor:
    • Plan Review
    • New Construction
    • Property Maintenance
    • Administrative Services

More than 400 City employees will be moving from their existing offices to temporary or permanent spaces throughout Alexandria. Additional moves will be announced in the upcoming months.

How does this move affect and benefit Alexandrians?

City Hall, an Alexandria landmark, is well over 100 years old. Market Square has been a civic gathering place since the City’s founding in 1749. Both facilities need significant updates to repair aging building components, improve technology and accessibility, enhance security, and bolster community engagement.

How will services be affected?

Starting this summer, several departments currently located in City Hall move to temporary spaces. Other departments will permanently move. During the transition, some services will be offered virtually or temporarily paused.

Office of Housing

  • August 20 to 27: Services available by phone at 703.746.4990. No in-person walk-ins during this time.
  • August 28: the Office of Housing will be fully operational at 100 N. Pitt St, Fourth Floor.

Department of Finance – Real Estate

  • September 24 to 26: Services will be available virtually only.
  • September 29: Appointment only services resume at 100 N. Pitt St. Call 703.746.4646 or email realestate@alexandriava.gov to schedule

Department of Code Administration

  • September 25 to 26: No appointments available for Plan Review or Administrative services. New Construction and Property Maintenance services will continue as usual.
  • September 30: All services fully resume.
