Vaccines, Healthy Habits, and More – How to Stay Healthy This Cold and Flu Season
As the weather gets cooler, more people start getting sick with things like colds, the flu, RSV, and COVID-19. These illnesses can be more than just annoying — they can cause serious health problems, missed school or work, and even hospital visits.
Alexandria Health Department (AHD) is encouraging community members to stay healthy this fall by getting vaccines and practicing healthy habits.

Don't Forget the Little Things!
When it comes to preventing respiratory illnesses, little actions every day can make a big difference. Practice these habits to stay safe:
- Regularly wash your hands with soap and water for 20 seconds. Use alcohol-based hand sanitizers if soap and water aren’t available.
- Be a safe sneezer! Cover your mouth and nose with your inner elbow (not your hands) when coughing or sneezing.
- Wear a mask if you want extra protection.
- Disinfect high-touch surface like doorknobs and handrails often.
- Stay home if you feel sick and wait at least 24 hours after a fever is gone before returning to school, work, and normal activities.
