ASO Assists in Storm Response Even after the recent snow and ice storm ended, dangerous and difficult conditions persisted so ASO worked with our community partners to help our neighbors in need. Sheriff Sean Casey and several deputies delivered Meals on Wheels to residents on back-to-back days, ensuring that those homebound neighbors did not go hungry. Sheriff Casey also plowed several streets and cleared access and parking for Casa Chirilagua which serves hundreds of Alexandrians. Our team members have helped shovel out residents who could not clear snow themselves. Want to help out, too? Consider volunteering as a Snow Buddy! |

Longtime Professional Employee Promoted to Manager Sheriff Casey recently promoted Andrea Hancock, a highly experienced and dedicated professional staff member, to the position of Inmate Classification Manager. Ms. Hancock had served as an Inmate Classification Counselor since 2000, and she previously worked as a deputy and then as a counselor at the Northern Virginia Juvenile Detention Center. In addition to her regular duties, she has mentored others, supported team-building efforts, and represented her colleagues on the Sheriff’s Employee Advisory Committee. Ms. Hancock brings valuable institutional knowledge and steady leadership to her new role and we wish her much success. |

ASO Charges Maryland Man with Threatening Judges Although threats to judges and other court officials are rare in Alexandria, the Sheriff’s Office does take them seriously and thoroughly investigates any such reports. This month, ASO opened a criminal investigation after learning that two judges had received multiple communications threatening them with violence. Deputies identified the suspect as a Maryland man and obtained seven arrest warrants, including two for felony charges of threats of death or bodily injury. On January 21, police in Cumberland, Md., arrested the suspect at his home. He is currently being held without bond and awaiting extradition to Alexandria. |

Cora Kelly Thanks Deputies on Law Enforcement Appreciation Day January 9 is Law Enforcement Appreciation Day and our deputies were thrilled when students, staff and faculty at Cora Kelly School for Math, Science and Technology expressed their thanks with cards, gifts, and smiles. All ACPS elementary schools have a veteran deputy assigned to them as a liaison and the deputies regularly stop by their assigned schools, visit with students, check on security, and take part in special activities. Our deputies always feel welcomed and appreciated so Sergeant Juarez, Deputy Montgomery and Firefighter Palucho were truly touched by the thoughtfulness of the Cora Kelly community – and the deputies made sure to share the handmade cards with all their colleagues! |

More than 200 Children Receive Gifts through Operation Elf Thanks to the generosity and kindness of community members, civic associations, local businesses and charitable organizations, Operation Elf provided holiday gifts to 126 children with a parent incarcerated in Alexandria. Because of the outpouring of support, Operation Elf was able to supply gifts to other deserving families, like those participating in Together We Bake, a program that empowers underserved and formerly incarcerated women through workforce training and personal development. Gifts were also shared with families in need throughout the community through referrals from partner agencies. Altogether, more than 200 children benefited from Operation Elf during the 2025 holiday season! Thank you, Alexandria! |
