The Alexandria Fire Department (AFD) is now accepting applications for the Firefighter I position. This full-time, entry-level role, starts at $59,648.42 per year. Those interested can apply now until August 18, 2025 on AFD’s webpage, alexandriava.gov/FireRecruitment.
As a firefighter recruit, you’ll receive comprehensive training in firefighting, emergency medical services, and fire prevention. Recruit school lasts approximately 26 weeks, during which you will be required to work eight-hour days, five days a week. Upon graduation, you will be assigned to a station and transition to shift work. The shift consists of 24-hour days, approximately 8–9 days per month, equating to a 49-hour work week.
