Community Health Improvement Plan Winter Progress Report Shares Updates on Alexandria’s Health Efforts

Alexandria Health Department and the Partnership for a Healthier Alexandria have released the Community Health Improvement Plan (CHIP) Winter 2024/25 Progress Report.

The report describes the status of CHIP tactics for the priority areas selected from Alexandria’s 2019 Community Health Assessment (CHA): mental health, poverty, and housing. The report and appendix were compiled using data shared by tactic owners from March – December 2024.

As of January 2025, 74 of the 80 planned total CHIP tactics are in progress and are managed by City agencies, nonprofits, coalitions, and/or boards and commissions. Tactics in the report’s “CHIP Spotlight” section include the revitalization of the Girls on the Run NOVA youth program, the launch of youth resource database ALX Beyond, and the efforts of the Alexandria Eviction Prevention Task Force.

The report also describes projects funded by Partnership for a Healthier Alexandria grants. Since 2021, the Partnership has awarded over $134,000 to local nonprofits who are implementing the CHIP.

Several grant-funded tactic owners reported notable progress on projects ranging from free home repairs to post-partum peer support groups to rapid re-housing for people facing homelessness.

As the 2025 Community Health Improvement Plan enters its final year, AHD and the Partnership are excited to highlight the progress made by tactic owners. They plan to build on this momentum for upcoming activities.

“It’s really exciting to see so many of these community-driven efforts come to life,” said AHD Public Health Planner Sean Curry, “and we’re also excited for what’s next – namely, the 2024-2025 Community Health Assessment.”

The 2024-2025 Community Health Assessment (CHA) is still underway. It explores Alexandria’s health issues and the context behind them. After the CHA report is released in June 2025, AHD and The Partnership for a Healthier Alexandria will use those findings to facilitate the development of a new Community Health Improvement Plan for 2026-2030.

“Our city has changed so much since the last 2019 Community Health Assessment,” said Partnership for a Healthier Alexandria Chair Allen Lomax. “So, we’re hoping people will carry the accomplishments and lessons learned from our 2025 CHIP and stay involved with our ongoing CHA process as we identify the next set of priorities.”
